Title: I want a smoke >.<
Post by: Ayden on April 30, 2014, 01:35:05 AM
I've stopped smoking well in advance for my surgery in late July. It's been six days and I figured the worst was over. But man... I want a smoke so bad. I'm not gonna cave, and I'm going cold turkey (no patches or gum here anyway) but damn. Ugh. Just needed to rant for a bit.

I quit cold turkey. It's not fun. I still wish I could smoke but I have nightmares about it. Like I'll be walking and next thing I know I'm smoking, then all I can think is "Oh God I have to start all over!!!"

You're doing good. Soon you'll hate the smell of anyone else smoking.

A girl friend suggested Tootsie Roll Pops. At first I laughed but they work. When you get itchy for a cig. just pop one in your mouth.  I have to stop myself, plastic surgery for June 10th, May 10th my last cig. I'm using low nicotene level E cigs, they help.   It's a nasty stubborn habit for sure!

Personal vaporizer (aka e cigarette) with 0mg nicotine and a really good flavor ;)

I am happy to make some recommendations on hardware & flavors if you need! It can be overwhelming.. there is a lot of neat stuff out there

Thanks for the support. I'm not planning to replace the habit with anything else, so I guess that makes it worse. Yesterday was bad but I got through it. My husband had me read him some stuff to get my mind off of it. Though I did have a dream that I bought a pack...

At least today is better.

I cold turkeyed 2 1/2 years ago after 25 years of a pack a day.

Every time I wanted one so badly I could kill sh*t I took a hot shower.  I was wet a lot, but it worked.  Haven't had one since.

I quit cold turkey after having a heart attack at 35. I smoked 4 packs a day for 15 years. A week on oxygen in the hospital helps a ton. Not really the recommended method though.

I came really close today to buying a pack. I got some bad family news and I was half way to the store when I turned around. I checked this thread and it helped. If y'all could do it so can I. Thanks so much! I should know by now that the ladies know best. :)

Really, thank you.

Keep it up Ayden! I quit a month ago because I had to have hip surgery. I've been smoking for 9 years (started when I was 17). I am still having cravings after a month but I just keep telling myself it's now or never. I brush my teeth when I have a craving and that is a good distraction. I'm probably gonna go do that right now because now I'm thinking about how good a cig would be...

you can do it! I quit a while ago, using patches.  Its been maybe a year and a half? I'm not sure. I still smoke sometimes if I bum one from someone, but that's only once every 3 months or so.

I do smoke hookah, but I'm gonna quit that too.

good luck!

Started when I was 13, quit when I was 25 for 5 years, started again at 30 and now I'm in withdrawal again at 34 but,,,,, given the choice of HRT vs. smokes it's an easy choice. Over here no doctor will prescribe estrogen if you smoke due to risk of blood clots.

I've got 6 days to stop cold. (30 days before scheduled plastic surgery) I only smoke or smoked very light cigs but still a T cig & stupid smoke. Ecigs are helping & I'm down to maybe 5 T cigs a day so maybe I can finally quit 100% soon. I have to, no choice.

I just about caved again. I had to pay a few bills and here we can do it at the convenience store. I looked up and I swear my brand was glowing. I came home, jumped in the shower (@Jill: I've been soaking wet for a few days)  and did 50 bench presses. I'm gonna be ripped in a month at this rate.

Mythy: thank you for sharing. I have been told the first week is hard, but it's nice to hear that a month is not uncommon. I was feeling pretty crappy about still being 'weak' enough to have cravings.

Francis: I keep telling myself I have no choice and it's working. Surgery is ten weeks away.

Antonia: I have to start getting my hormones here since my doctor is in my home country. I found out that doctors here will not prescribe T unless I am tobacco and alcohol free. It's a crazy good motivator.

Elijah: hookah bars are really popular here. I've been avoiding them out of principle. It is so tempting though.

I'm past the initial withdrawal phase, but that mental desire is there. Thank you everyone. I'm holding out. It's supposed to get easier from here. Fingers crossed, eh?

I have 2 days until my last cig which is 32 days before my face lift.  I've done or or decent I think. They really do not taste good any more & a tootsie roll pop is an amazing funny tool. When I get the urge to smoke I pop in a sucker in my mouth & relax. It really works for me to stop each cig. at a time.

Also rather than using ecigs which is also nicotene & trying to cut it all off at once.

You can do it GF.

Canada, it's the same with birth control pills that contain estrogen, they even give smokers another pill.

Has the vaping craze not caught on where you guys are? Here in LA it seems like hardly anyone smokes cigarettes anymore and I think vape shops are outnumbering tobacco shops.

They used to be gross (especially the disposable ones in convenience stores - what a joke), but now the hardware is so good that it's kind of like the best hookah hit every time.

Highly highly recommend, they are wonderful :)

You can do it, hon! If I can so can you. I have a tobacco shop right across the street from me and they really cheap here. The first 7 days are the hardest. I have the mental desire but the physical symptoms are long gone. I feel a lot better now. I write a lot and my writing was hampered temporarily, but I replaced my smoke breaks with tea/coffee breaks in the morning, baking abs exercise. I finished two chapters and an article last week so the was very encouraging.

Vapor cigs are not popular here in Japan even though smoking is as common as drinking tea. It was probably better for me to not have an alternative.

I haven't checked this thread in a bit, but I wanted to say thank you again. To anyone who is trying to quit: it sounds a lot scarier than it is.

Glad you're feeling better. I'm trying to break the carb habit--I've done a lot of stress-eating all winter--and sometimes I literally forget and buy the junk food without thinking. It messes with my weight AND my head. I've fallen off the wagon a half dozen times in the past six weeks, and my moods have been all over the place.

If I'm having this hard a time, I can only imagine how difficult the past few weeks have been for you.
