Title: Finally had my Endo appointment...
Post by: Alexa on May 06, 2014, 02:37:20 AM
Hi all, it's been a while since I posted last, but I finally got in to see an Endocrinologist and have some questions.
First of all, they work on informed consent, which is nice. Even though my therapist was prepared to write a letter if needed.

Anyway, the meeting seemed to go as most had explained. She made sure I had a safe place to live, made sure I was sure of myself, and understood the dangers and effects of HRT, etc. She then asked what type of E I wanted (patch) and if I wanted Spiro. I declined the Spiro, as I want to see if E is enough to drop T levels, if not I can add it. After that she left to print out the blood test order, and made an appointment for 3 months out. Now I just need to go somewhere and get the tests done and have them faxed. Once she sees the results she will call in the prescription.

Now from what I can tell, neither of the blood tests she ordered test any hormone levels. The tests are "Comprehensive Metabolic Panel" and "Lipid Profile". Am I incorrect in assuming that she should have a baseline hormone level? It also seems like 3 months is a long time between starting HRT and having a followup.

Anyway, I thought I would be ecstatic to be finally about to start HRT, but I can't help but be put off by her not ordering any test which includes hormone levels. I'll probably get the levels checked while I'm at it just out of curiosity.

I think every endo is different, many take little notice of hormone levels to start with, they are interested in the liver profile so that they can tell you are handling the HRT safely. One thing many look it is the SHBG, which will rise on HRT and show that you are removing T even if the level is still at a 'male' level. They just want to know that it is essentially inactive by being removed from your system.

And congrats!!!

At first they reviewed my labs after 30 days, but I believe 3 months is pretty standard. I did take them up on the Spiro though as it killed the over whelming sex drive and let me relax. Each to their own though. Congrats on starting! :)

Ok awesome! I feel better knowing that there's nothing abnormal about her approach. I can't wait to get things moving in the right direction. Thanks!
