Title: Getting a hair cut
Post by: CLN on May 12, 2014, 07:16:56 PM
I'm planning on getting my hair cut this Friday. I have dark black hair and want to get a medium/long boy's haircut.
I am finding it very difficult to choose a haircut that will suit me properly and hoped you guys could give me a hand.

Thank you in advance,
CLN

Go to a place that typically only serves men, so even if they don't agree with/don't like what you ask for they won't have alternatives in mind to push on you. I made the mistake of going to a regular place (serving men and women) once when early in transition and the lady ignored my instructions, cut my hair however she felt like, explained that I wouldn't "look pretty" with a men's cut, and then charged me like 60 dollars.

Later, when I was passing okay but had a kid calling me "mom" and "dad" interchangeably, I went to a men's barber and explained what I wanted. I told the guy I was trans and that I wanted to minimize my femininity, and gave him creative license to do whatever. I figured if he messed it up I could just give myself a mohawk or shave it all off. What he did was interesting and it worked well for me, basically a respectable short cut that you could wear to an office job, but cut shorter/thinner up near the corners of the forehead. I'm not sure how best to explain it and I wish I took before and after photos.

I don't pay for haircuts anymore, and probably wouldn't even if I had plenty of money. I keep my hair pretty short by feel with clippers. I use the longest setting on the top and a setting a few sizes down on the sides, paying special attention to keeping the hairline straight on the face in front of the ears.

Also I'm sure you already know this but it helps if you bring a photo of someone who has the haircut you want.

Unluckily, there are no barbers in the city where I live, there are only places that serve men and women or only women :l

That's the problem, I don't really know what haircut I want...

depends on your face structure, if its round etc. also the length you want your hair to be, how long or short

My face is somewhere between the triangular/roundish type (It looks like a little boy's face).
I now have my hair two inches below my shoulders and I would like to cut it something in between medium/long boy's haircut. (not longer than a shaggy cut).

Try a Google search for men's haircuts for round faces or something like that. When I was still going to a mixed salon I had to tell the stylist "I want to look boy, not butch." The first time she kinda messed it up but it got better. Barbershops seem to be growing in popularity with retro/rockabilly hair making a comeback. But seriously, try the search and check it out. Go in armed with the name of the cut you like and be confident. Good luck! Oh, I personally steer clear of shaggy cuts because well meaning stylists seem to always make them look like pixie cuts somehow.

YMMV but for me an undercut hairstyle (google "mens undercut hair" for some examples, there are many variations) works well to give a more squared and masculine appearance. Very short on the sides, a couple inches on top, and shaving/shaping the hairline to look a bit more square (more time on T will probably make this step unnecessary, haha). I do it myself with clippers, there are several helpful youtube videos for DIY men's haircuts.

Can't make suggestions not knowing what you look like, mate.
