Title: Do you feel fat?
Post by: Thundra on July 21, 2007, 01:49:22 PM
I am struggling with middle-age weight gain for the first time in my life due to an injury.

It's psychologically debillitating.

Anybody ever feel frustrated or angry about their fat quotient?

For a former anorexic, I don't whether to be angry or proud?

Poll is anonymous. Dig in.

I feel fatter than I am... I've been told I'm fairly slim, but meh~ I guess I'm a normal healthy weight, but I used to be visibly overweight. Self-consciousness about my weight has followed me into my healthier days.

I also only eat maybe half as much as I once did, and some of the greasy, fatty foods I used to eat now make me queasy. Can't say that I really miss them either.

I work on Body Mass Index (BMI)

That way I am not fat, just to short for my current weight. If I grow 6 inches I will be fine, so I am working on that!

Damn girl. GID ain't your biggest problem if YOU think you look fat. No way.

QuoteThank you Keira.  Yeah, I shouldn't do what I do, but I can't help it.  I am getting used to not eating.  Probably my stomach is shrinking or something...anyway...

I often feel fat.  Which is odd.  I'm at the extreme low-end of healthy (according to the BMI), bordering on underweight and I often feel obese.

That's Twiggy. Obviously, umm, thin and unless you've got a very thin frame like she had (look at the size of her minuscule kneecaps, her frame was very light) its a look impossible to emulate in a healthy way (her nickname comes from her early teenage years so she does not look anorexic like current models that try to emulate her). Notice that even though she's thin, she doesn't look really bony, there's still some fat on her.

I know.  And I do eat.  Honestly.  I am naturally thin.  I don't mess with my diet to be this thin.  I eat when I'm hungry, which is actually quite often.

The trouble is that my mother spent years telling me (despite my doctor saying I was fine) that if I kept eating the way I did when I was a kid, that when I went away to school, I'd become fat.  I spend a lot of time pinching myself looking for body fat.  Which even as I am doing it, it occurs to me that I shouldn't...

I am a bit podgy. When I finished puberty my body decided that instead of all the massive amounts of energy that went into a impressive growth spurt, leading me from shortest in the class to average, it would bulk me out some, and some more, and some more. I reached fairly ugly proportions, I already have a small head and a large frame, this increased till it looked like it was perched there. I have still slimmed down some and have to wear belts.  :D  I hope that I will not put it on again, because I prefer being slimmer. Though I am actually getting heavy because I am developing a few hefty, arm, back and leg muscles. I like these. They are fun and useful. If I could get a flat tummy, a small waist and a smooth and soft face, it would be ace.

But at the moment I feel fat, but not as fat as I used to be.

Tell me something please,

I am trying to discern if what I do is... normal in essence.

Now, for myself my internal 'map' says that I should be about 130lbs but roughly 5'5" or so, obviously I am taller in the waking world but 130lbs is 'right' to me. Now, as such I find I tend to feel 'fat' at 150lbs (I reached that once then blinked and found myself at 130lbs again) I LIKE this weight, and long ago I swore that I would never be fat. ... This is all fine an dandy as far as I know however how I remain like this does not seem proper; I eat once a day, and sometimes I have to force myself to do that. The short form is I feast or famine with the famine being the more normal state. I abhor solid food and quite literally can not think about what I am doing while I am eating else my throat closes off and the rest of the food on my plate rots. I hate that. But, that is what happens.

So, um, might there be any advice out there? Just telling me to 'eat more' is worthless, I am told I need to eat all of the time, it doesn't help, doesn't work, doesn't change a damn thing.

...

I basically really don't know what to do.

Any thoughts are welcome, thank you.

QuoteWhat would 129lbs with a height of 5'9" qualify as?

Anorexic in IMNSHO.

It depends on height, frame size, and age too, but 130# @ 5'9" is way low.
It speaks to the cartoonish image we have of women as promugated in Hollywood.
(i.e. you is fat and ugly if you don't look like this)

They are killing our young women, and even men are becoming susceptible to the disease now in greater numbers.

Now 130# at 5'5" sounds healthier looking, but it depends on exercise and diet too, not just statistics. I think at 5'9", you could weigh around 170# or better depending on your body type, frame size, muscle mass, etc. and still look very healthy.

Our perception of ourself is always different than what other people see. Especially so when we are in the throes of a disease like anorexia. You lose the ability to think rationally.

I know that I am overweight now because I am carrying a paunch for the first time in my life. [No! not the guy from Chips!] It's gross. But back then, I felt that I was fat when I weighed 140#, which was completely irrational. That is a full 80# less than I weigh now. And I eventually went far below 140#.

This is a tipping point that you can reach where you slide from extremely thin to unhealthy. It varies from person to person, but it sounds as if you are targeting it. If you go there, it will kill you. I was lucky, very lucky, to come back. But it affects your body for the rest of your life.

Concentrate more on how healthy you look, rather than how you look wearing this or that. many styles of clothing make everyone look heavy. But, when you are alone and nekid, or with someone and almost nekid, you can see whether you look healthy or not. Anorexic women look skinny, not healthy. And what good is looking skinny if you can't do anything, and nobody wants you?

Just like there is no such thing as a former alchoholic, there is no such thing as a former anorexic.  You had better be careful or you will be sucked into it again.  The number of middle-aged anorexics is growing rapidly.

All right.  Tink, Tay, Thundra, and anybody I missed.  Anorexia is a very ganderous condition.  It has the highest mortality rate of any condition listed in the DSM IV.  All of you, please look into getting help!

Thoundra, 170 at 5 foot 9 is just over the healthy BMI limit of 25 if you've got a normal size female frame (which many TS have); if you've got an above normal frame for female (even more frequent), your under the upper limit.

Going by BMI, 130 at 5 foot 9, is still within healthy weight (18.5 and over) if you've got a normal female frame (with a large female frame, so that would put that weight as underweight then). How big is the wrist circumference?

My wrist is 6.1 for 6 foot, which is a small frame even for a female, so my ideal female weight if I'm not athletic is around 145, about 155-160s if I'm athletic, that's what I'm shooting for.

Keira, yeah I know, but you have to understand that when you are talking to a "former" anorexic [correct Lisbeth, just like alcoholism], you try not to give a "hard" target, or one that is ridiculously out of reach. So, 170# @ 5'9" is on the low side, but do you realize how much another 10 or 20 pounds looks like to an anorexic? Think Mt. Everest. You gotta try to go as small as possible, and incremental. [Actually, if people transitioning used the same psychology that is taught to recovering anorexics, it would greatly benefit them.]

I am a little better than six feet and a size 14, and I still see myself as "fat." Get the idea?
I know of what I speak. If I didn't have the poncherelli with me, I'd be pretty happy actually.

Yes, I am overweight!!!  I haven't been under 200 lbs since I was in 9th grade. I have tried all the diets and I feel I'm in good shape as far as health goes. I ride a bike in the summer, 17miles a day, never to lose an ounce. I'm 5'9" and I weigh in at between 220 and 230. I still have arms that are quite muscular and they are at 16 inches around and my wrists are 8 inches. I have been on hormones for about 10 years and I'm post-op 3years now. I have lost weight and a lot of muscle, arms use to be 19 inches. I have C-cups but they look like they are A-cups when you look at my body. I wish I was small and petite, but it aint going to happen in my life time.

I don't believe in BMI

Some people's genetic makeup simply defies the BMI and these people are all made to feel bad.  I'm not making excuses for myself.  I'm 5-10 and 186.  I can drop weight in 2 weeks just by walking it off. So, I'm not using my own condition as an excuse to ignore the BMI.
I just really don't accept it as a standard.  It's a form of terror upon innocent people whose bodies can never be anything other than what they are.

I'm not advocating for couch potatoism either.  I just believe that if a person treats themself well, that they can be healthy despite what experts tell them.

I think my bathroom scale is broken.  I have gained weight in the past two years (I love juxtaposing 13 and 2 years)  with my assorted after meal mints.  I think they contain fat boosters or something.   By the way I am no longer a waif.  I think I have heavy bones.

Groan,

When I was not doing exercise I went from a size 12 skirt to size 16. I brought some jeans in Sydney and now I am worried they will be to loose - I need to loose some weight to fit into my ball dress  ;D.  I am now swimming twice a week to help me burn that awful fat. I hate it when I did not exercise.

Somehow I'm around 5' 9" and but have made a concious effort and am now 135 and still loosing weight. A few years ago I was "working out" and was around 170, which disgusts me to think about it nowadays. Basically I cut out carbs, eat lots of chicken, meat, fish, pork, etc. I still have broad shoulders which I hate, but I know those will be reduced eventally.

For the most part, I don't feel "fat" per se, but I also don't feel or consider myself skinny either.  I'm just under 170 at 5'9" and I tend to wear my weight well (most people think I weigh a lot less than I do).  My goal is to get down to 150, which is in the healthy range according to weight charts for women of my height.  My face looks better and better as I lose weight, but I also get more and more apprehensive about the weight loss because my adam's apple is starting to show now. :(  I guess I don't really feel fat because I have weighed so much more for a long time.  Back in 2004, I peaked at about 210 and have gradually been going down in weight since then (never recessing to my previous plateaus).  Oddly enough, I don't seem to have lost much strength since then, so I'm not sure what's up with that.  For instance, I know people talk about their bicep size going down to nothing, but as far as I can tell, it's exactly the same size as before HRT. ???

They've already done that... several times.  And they're all hazardous to your health.

According to the BMI I am in the middle of normal. But the BMI doesn't take into account how the weight is distributed. If I could move the excess weight from my waist and move half of it up and the other half down, I would look much better.

Xenical, Tenuate Dospan, Adipex, Meridia....etc, etc, etc.  I agree with Lisbeth though; they are very dangerous to your health; some of them are very addictive, for they work by suppressing the neuro-transmitters on your brain that cause you to have an appetite.  Others interfere with blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels; hence, you need to be monitored by a physician and a dietician when taking them...

What makes you look the most male is visceral fat, to find out if you've got it, stand sideways next to a mirror and just let your stomach go, if you've got little fat, there should be little difference in your profile, if not, you'll look pregnant.

Most TS I've seen have LOTS and lots of visceral fats and should put themselves on strong exercise and dietary regime till the waist to hip ratio goes down below 0.8.

My opinion is that unless your over 45, were having a belly, makes you blend with the post-menauposal women which also have non gynoid fat distribution, getting that fat off helps greatly in pasing.

I specifically remember looking at my skinny legs at the age of 16 or 17 and thinking they looked or felt fat. They weren't. But I could feel the 'female' fat under the skin and it drove me nuts and I found it a bit disturbing.

I think that was a part of my gender dysphoria that I didn't realize was gender dysphoria. I was aware of how boys' skin and limbs felt at that age, and they did not feel like mine. There's a different feel and texture to female skin that is thinner and has more fat under it. Even though I wasn't fat I felt like I was wearing a fat suit. (Which technically is sort of true... there is much more body fat on an average female body weight for weight, and usually all located under the skin.)

The T has changed that now, I have different texture skin and the 'female' fat is disappearing from under it. Unfortunately it's deciding to shift off the butt and legs and add itself on my belly, meaning I went from "normal" to having a bit of a stomach suddenly lol. It has to go, and it's taking a lot of exercise to get rid of it. But it still makes me feel bad until it is gone.

At this time of my life: no, not at all. I'm at a healthy weight for my height and I do acknowledge that my stomach isn't flat and that my thighs and butt have some considerable soft roundness to them, while my chest and arms are quite lacking in the fat department. But it doesn't bother me and I feel normal weight. On some days I even feel thin.

However I have struggled with weight issues and eating disorders before, so I used to feel fat at the same weight as I am now, and even at times I weighed less. My weight has bounced around quite a lot over the years, but mostly I've been within the healthy range. This is the first time I'm actually happy with my weight, in the sense that it's just alright with it and it doesn't really matter much.

However I do feel a little bit of an internal stress that I really want to stay within the healthy weight range. But I'm trying not to think about it too much. Being on T didn't change my body shape or fat distribution much at all. I was always still noticably curvy, and it took me forever to eventually become okay with that.

Yeah I feel a bit fat. I'm trying to lose weight but I'm not good at that lately lol
I may wanna do fat transfer to fill my boobs with (very stubborn) fat. That's a dream of mine to have natural fatty breasts lol...
