Utilize (esp. when you can just say "use")
Persons- An aggregate of mans, womans and childs?
Aggregate- or any other word with "greg" in it.  I HATED having to be a Greg.

Gender spacific variations of single words.

ie, Child is fine.

daughter and son?

sorry its just stuff like
Hes my son
and Shes my daughter

realy get my knickers in a knot.

Why do you need to refference a gender twice.
The same with

Parent/s

and mom and dad.

EDIT - Found a word

Autobiography - because biographys are hardly written automatically

I agree with "utilize," but why rag on "persons"? It was perfectly correct for centuries and still has its uses even though it has been supplanted in most cases by "people."

I have always hated the word "luggage."

But do you hate word itself or what it describes? The word is rather inventive, in that it quite nicely elicits the yuckiness of what it refers to.

I've grown to hate words that my students (and others) routinely misuse. For example, "apart." As in "Now that I am apart of this neighborhood, I look forward to the next block party." Um, no. I'm always tempted to say, "Don't you mean 'apart from'?"

"Anywho" just drives me up a wall. First of all, I hate it. Second, if you're going to write it, at least spell it "anyhoo."

This. When spoken, "a part" and "apart" are identical; when written, not so much. Same goes for "their"/"there"/"they're" -- it drives me right up a wall when people mix them up when writing.

And no, we aren't necessarily English teachers, just people who care about language. I think, too, that this may be a bit of a generational thing. (These dang young whippersnappers just don't know how to write good.  :icon_mrgreen:)

It is an answer to a question but it is the one thing that drives me crazy with the English language (sorry I strive for proper spelling because I know I'm so bad at it)

Person A: Do you mind?
Person B: Yes

Person B has given a affirmative answer allowing person A to do something.  Yet the correct response should be no as in "no go right ahead"

Fashon I hate that word, attire styles apeals more to me idk why though.

OT - Babble below
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I Tell you what i do love about language, That it evolves.

Take certian insults eg slag and slut. i never hear this word for what means. Now days its used to say "That person rejected my advances so im  insult them by calling them a name that is suposed to sugest that my advance was acepted"

I Hate being told to use a bigger word, that means the same thing.
For me its not the word that important, but refference and context. This is comunication.

I know that standards are important.
But omg wtf is still comunicating, unless the refference is lost and the reader has no knowlage that "wtf" refferences "what the freak" or omg reffers to "oh my gosh."

Performant, which isn't even a word unless you're speaking French.

My bigger problem is "look-at-me-I-talk-smart" speech I get to hear on a work-daily basis: "Dog fooding" "Parking on a down hill slope" gagh! Then the person said the given phrase gets to wax intellectual about what the term means, and that's where the looking smart comes in.

I sit there and remember looks can be, and in this case most certainly are, deceiving.

"No problem" as a response to saying "Thank you" to a waiter/waitress cashier, etc.

"like" or "you know" used throughout a sentence. "It's like, you know, when I went to the store it was, like, early in the morning and, you know, I was really in a hurry."

I have grown to hate the phrase "begs the question" because I rarely see it used properly. It doesn't mean "invites the question"; it means CIRCULAR REASONING. If you are begging the question, you are indulging in a logical fallacy.

Another one: "Select brands on sale" usually really means "SELECTED brands on sale." Well, that's going the way of the dodo, so I might as well capitulate now.

Text shortcuts. Often used, but unnecessary.

Emails that read like they were written by a third grader that should have failed first grade.

OK, I guess my peeve is more of capitalization, punctuation, and paragraph misuse.

Oh, my. Never teach developmental writing at a community college in a depressed area. You, too, will become depressed.

I was actually shocked to run into adults who didn't realize that they were supposed to capitalize proper names, capitalize the first letter of the first word in a sentence, and lowercase common nouns. I sometimes get the most ridiculous sentences. Stuff like "john smith essay argue that mutlitask is bad but my Cousin is a expert he does it all the time."

"Peeps" instead of "people".

Text speak in regular writing.  H8r, 2moro, 4evr, etc.   If you're trying to convey that you're immature and/or an idiot, this is a great way to succeed at that.  When I read posts that are full of these, I tend to ignore them.  Sorry.

However, I do agree with you on the use of text speak. THAT is truly annoying. Like, ya know what I mean? I, like, can't totally stand that stuff at all. Fer realz.

Off the top of my head, the word handsome is very irritating to me and probably my number one hated word.  However, that's mainly because it's one of those stab in the back words that would hurt whenever applied to me.  It's sort of tainted it for me, though I'm tolerant of it being used on someone else.

Other than that, I hate many words that are associated with body fluids or functions.  Seriously, I get very disgusted when people talk about that type of stuff.  It's gross and it makes me a little ill.

Then what are leggings?

Leggings are a type of skin-tight garment that covers the legs and that may be worn by both men and women. Formerly, leggings were two separate garments, one for each leg.

Modern leggings are typically made from a blend of lycra (aka spandex), nylon, cotton, or polyester blend, but they can also be made from wool, silk and other materials.

I will say that above all else, I am annoyed by people who seem to misspell every other word they type. You have spellcheck. You probably even have auto-correct. Use them. Please. I am too distracted trying to figure out what word you meant to type to comprehend your post.

At the university where I work the administration has decided that everything must be trans-disciplinary.   Besides the fact that this is just a nuanced version of interdisciplinary for which no one has a definition, they had to choose to use this in the same year I discover I am transgender. As if I didn't have enough triggers already!

I also have become leery of make-up, as in a make-up exam.  Every time I notice a stick note with the word make-up I panic that I have left a reveling shopping note out where others can see it!

From my seat, when the speaker uses a word or phrase and carries on for three minutes or so before saying, "Does anyone want to know what I mean by [phrase]?" it is a pet peeve of mine, and I do interpret speech like that as someone lifting themselves up while putting me down so they can explain things to me.

True using words you are comfortable with as they came from childhood, evolved into your everyday usage as you grew or just because they are a whole lot easier to pronounce can be understood,  everyone has there own slang that is what makes us all unique. The people that use the words and phrases with the sole intention of getting you to ask what they mean so they can wax on lyrically and sound oh so smart,  deserved to be locked up in the garden shed like the tools they truly are.

Speaking of childhood training, a lot of students in high schools across the U.S. are rewarded for pompous speech in their writing. I cannot imagine why. Many of those sentences are so wordy, syntactically tangled, and vocabulary-challenged that they don't even make sense. Every once in a while, I will have the student come to office hours and try to explain the worst sentences--or, more difficult still, actually parse them for me. These students very often cannot disentangle the mess and don't know the meaning of the big, impressive words they use.

I was recently at a conference attended by quite a few high school teachers. I should have asked about this phenomenon.
