Title: Question for trekkers
Post by: Thundra on July 22, 2007, 01:41:43 PM
Post by: Thundra on July 22, 2007, 01:41:43 PM
I used to be a trekker in youth. I loved this space version of Wagon Train, where everyone was happy and the minutae of daily life was simplified.
But, back then, I saw the adventure that came with warp drive to be paramonunt. It was exciting.
Now that I am older, I find that the idea of replication is something that we really need in today's world. It would reduce our dependency on natural resources, and help save the planet.
It would totally change our societies and our relationship with the planet.
What do you think? Agree? Disagree?
More suggestions for options?

I voted advanced medical care.
If they could do a spinal transplant for Worf, then surely they could grow a penis or a uterus for trans people, right?

Nuh uh. Replicators take raw atoms and make them into whatever you want.
Like a fudge sundae.

Meh, I am the odd ball it seems.
My first choice, "Warp drive? - 1 (14.3%)" -- There is bunches and bunches out there, good stuff. ... It's the explorer in me I suppose.
An my second choice, "universal translator? - 0 (0%)" -- Miscommunication is the cause of so many problems... Besides, when you meet fancy previously undiscovered species it would be good to understand them!
But, uh, replicators would TOTALLY rock, of that there is no doubt, lol. (and would do SO much to fix this world really. No more have and have nots? DUDE, sign me up!)
advanced medical care? Good, no doubt about it, but not ... earth shattering important. Sure would be handy though!
Transporter? Handy toy, but doesn't hold a candle to a warp craft ;)
Holodeck? Meh, reality is strange enough there is no need.

Definitely warp drive. The show could not exist without it. The ability to travel at speeds faster than light was necessary for the show to exist. Creating a warp shell inside normal spacetime to avoid the rules of normal spacetime was a brilliant idea.
As far as transporters and replicators, when Stephen Hawking guest starred on the show he pointed out that in order to transport particles one would have to know both their location and speed, something forbidden by the uncertainty principle. The same would be true for replicators or holideck. In later episodes Gene Roddenberry added "Heisenburg compensators" to get around the Heisenburg Uncertainty Principle as it has become known.
Love always,
Elizabeth

I liked Tribbles!
But I would love a holodeck in my house.
I would chain up Seven of Nine and do unspeakable things to her.

I chose advanced medical care because it would be nice to know that a lot of suffering would be ended.
I do think Thundra's choice of replicator is really important too.
Next poll - "Are all Transpeople Dorks?"

Holodeck, because it is like a replicator on steroids.
Also, the mini-replicator, although I've never seen them used except for on robots.

I voted transporter.... and in that comes the replicator and holodeck technologies.... not to mention the wonderful things that could be done in medicine, law enforcement, garbage disposition... the list goes on and on.
IF you could get enough energy to make a transporter to work, you could easily propel a vehicle to mind bending speeds, for it takes more than we could ever conceive.
From what I remember, and I'm not a trekkie, they devised the transporter on the show because they didn't have the budget for filming a shuttle every time they wanted to go down to a planet. Beaming someone down was lots easier to film and required little in terms of special effects.

Replicators aren't anything more than half a transporter using a read-only pattern buffer. It would revolutionize the entire economy if you could transport goods as nothing but "bulk matter."

They did. On one of the Deep Space Nine episodes, Quark has a money-making scheme that requires the presence of a clothes-wearing female Ferengi. They haven't got one, so Quark gets Dr. Bashir to give him a sex-change. It's total, Quark's body is fully female, his character is altered slightly by the hormonal change and he doesn't like it. But it's also totally reversable, and the proceedure is painless and appears to take less than an hour. I'm sure the writers just threw it in because it's cute to see Armin Shimmerman in drag, but it made me want to write a Trek episode about people who have turned the medical technology into a cultural phenomenon and go about changing sexes the way modern people change hairstyles. That'd rock. And it'd still rock even if you never wanted to change back, 'cause being able to would take most of the terror out of the prospect, for oneself and ones loved ones.
I chose medical technology too. Not 'cause of that, but because, hey. Sure. We're all here to go into space, but how about making it so we're all here, first?

I voted for Warp Drive since I could take my starship and fly around the Solar System and leave everyone else back on Earth with George Bush and the White House gang! :police:
Also, I like those Photon Torpedoes. Shoot those at the anti TG crowd and watch them scatter! I like the food replicator too, you could replicate fast food and open up your own Space McDonalds (serves billions of aliens everyday) and you could have like a McSpock Happy Meal complete with a working phaser.
Imagine the wierd kinky S&M stuff you could do with the Star Trek technology too......methinks the medical labs would be raided by us very quickly. If you want to look like Sixx from Tripping the Rift, that would be cool. >:D God knows what wierd tech they use in the bedroom....alien on human action would get awfully funky if you ask me but I'll bet a good chunk of Amuricans would get into Male/Female/Spaceman spanking or so....maybe I shouldn't go further here... :eusa_dance:
OOGA BOOGA!!! ;D

That reminds me very much of John Varley: he's got one universe (the so-called Eight Worlds series) where just this is going on, sometimes central to the story and more often as cultural background. And yes, that rocks.

ROLFMHO Yes it is starting to sound REALLY familiar. Sure I can help with the curtains in the brig but remember Miss Kitty gets to run whatever the equivalent of 10 Forward is.
Maebh might have objections to another captain but she would probably accept the position of Number 1 just so she could let her pirate streak come out and lead a mutiny.

Quote from: BeverlyAnn on July 26, 2007, 11:04:11 AMNumber 1 is a better position anyway. Captains aren't supposed to be allowed on landing parties. I'm also thinking that sick bay might be a better place than the brig for me to set up shop. I'll bet that there are lots of medical devices that my patrons would be interested in.
