so this is something i've been wondering a lot recently. like some girls, i have no desire to drive and i rather my SO drive me everywhere. so my question is, why do girls, not taking about in general but those handful not drive? is it our instincts that tell us not to drive or is it something that we just dont do. o.o this is one aspect of being a girl i dont understand at all lol

I like driving. A problem is when wearing high heels. It is tricky, but not so much dangerous. Here a lot of young ladies drive alone.

I have a licence, but haven't driven for over 15 years. That is mainly due to a lack of a car, but I guess I've had plenty of opportunity over the years to buy one I just refocused my money elsewhere, especially of late with electrolysis, a new wardrobe, etc. I don't have any particular desire to be chauffeured everywhere by my SO though (not that I have one), I mostly walk for short trips, and use public transport/taxis for the rest. I catch lifts where they're offered, on occasions I'll ask for them but I'm not happy with being dependent on someone else to get me around. Not sure why I haven't gotten back behind the wheel of a car, there was no traumatic experience, but I suspect I've massively lost my confidence.

I love to drive and my wife doesn't like driving where there is a lot of traffic, but doesn't mind driving on open roads. That's probably the only thing that even before transitioning, I did that was traditionally male. Everything else, I have always done the traditional female roles and her the male roles. However, we don't separate roles by gender, just by who is better at what. We both have done every task (cooking, laundry, wash car, etc.)

I haven't noticed this phenomenon where I live. Maybe it's a regional thing?

Everyone here drives regardless of gender. No public transport to speak of. No buses, no trains and cabs are super expensive.

We have public buses here, but it takes longer time. And public transportation is less developed in my hometown compared with the main land. The average number of cars per household is highest in my hometown (1.55 cars), and I have 3 cars including a minivan. Usually I drive to my office at mid night when public transport is not available. Cabs are very cheap here compared with other developed countries.
My wife gives a ride to my little daughter every business day, as my daughter is afraid of a barking dog on her way home from the school. We encourages her to walk as she becomes fattier.

Hmm thats interesting. I wouldn't have assumed that was a girl thing. Then again I've never been much one to understand girl things ::)
I will say though, that I LOVE to drive. I also love to ride in cars, but mostly I love to drive. Put me behind a wheel for a 12 hour drive any day.... as long as you're giving me gas money too. ;)

I haven't the slightest clue, but I personally DESPISE driving. I can't stand it. If I had a S/O, I would much rather her drive, or live in a place with adequate public transportation.

I pretty much have to drive because I get sick on the terribad public transportation. The fact I'm a car nut is a fringe benefit. (which isn't to say I'm a fan of the cost of car ownership but that's anther can of worms)

I hate driving, mostly because of traffic and dangerous/annoying drivers but also because it's boring. I do like riding motorbikes/scooters though. Cheap, convenient, badass and fun. Unfortunately the public transport is pretty crap here, so in some areas you don't have a choice.

I avoided driving for many years after a terrible accident when young. Had to describe it in court as a 10 year old after seeing it from the passenger seat. Watched my mother die next to me before I passed out. :'( Impacted the rest of my life.
I do drive now after much therapy but it annoys me seeing how others drive with no regard to the road rules.

When I drive the phone goes away and the only time any food/beverage is consumed is when stopped at a light, not while texting and reading the paper at the same time as "driving".

I don't think driving really has any relation to gender, culture perhaps but not gender itself. I drive as a job, granted I don't enjoy driving a tractor trailer in the least, I don't mind my Prius at all.
Don't get me wrong, I love the Metro, but it doesn't go everywhere, and I have places to be.

I drive, but most of the time use my electric bike - wonderful invention, when we go out we always take taxis, never know when either of us will have a drink and I never drink and drive. I know to my cost that one!!

I would love for mine to do that, but if she just INSISTS I drive, then I will, but she will know that there's a good chance I will crash the car or get stopped by the police. I'm such a horrible driver.

I love driving. It's freeing and fun. While I know nothing about cars other than driving one, it doesn't have to be a chore. It's a good way of catching up on podcasts or to sing your favorite songs with a little privacy you otherwise wouldn't have. The only thing that sucks is the traffic, which is horrible at times, and the gas money that I can't afford. However, if I get a chance to be a passenger, I prefer doing that. That's mainly because of the price of gas and that I don't like talking much while I am driving.

One city here has a population of 750 people. Into the city, might as well take a horse.

When travelling abroad, rental cars give a lot of freedom. After driving in Spain about 15 years ago, I got a confidence that I can drive in any city of the world. The worst place was Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia).
In April, I rented a big passenger car to tour around Big Island of Hawaii with my colleagues. Without the navigation system, I just drove with a map. The U.S. is one of the easiest regions for driving.

In my blood family (u.s. southerners) there are some women who don't drive, who either never learned how or who did and then stopped once they got married. I always assumed that was an odd cultural throwback to several generations ago, when women didn't really do much of anything other than raise kids and shuck corn and whatnot.
That said, I don't drive. I have a valid license, but cars scare the bejeezus out of me. I've only been in a few accidents (one on a city bus) and I feel like they wouldn't have happened if I had been the one driving, but still I get twitchy when either riding in or walking near most vehicles that look large enough to kill somebody.
I put enormous effort into living near public buses and trains and streetcars, and I would place the need to pay city rent ahead of food or internet so I can continue to not drive. I love not being responsible for the lives of everyone around me when I commute to places, and I love not paying for insurance or gasoline, and I love not worrying about breakdowns or repairs.
I'm considering subscribing to zipcar or something like it so I can visit caves or the coast or the mountains, but I don't feel confident enough to do that yet.

I'm gonna be one messed up girl!! I LOVE to drive! We live in the desert SW, and I'd think nothing of driving 6hrs to do Disney, rather than a :54min flight there. I was a student auto shop teacher in high school. I worked in several speed shops (built race cars) while in college in.. wait for it... Daytona Beach.. I think nothing of replacing a radiator, doing brakes, rebuilding a carburetor or removing/replacing an in tank fuel pump. Same goes with a stereo system.
Now, with my nails, would I want to rebuild an engine or do a motor swap (have a truck with a blown motor in the driveway now). No. I could do it, I just choose not to.
But driving... that is therapy for me.. 6-8hrs.. in any direction.. Vegas, LA, San Diego, Albuquerque.. open road driving.. even freeway or in town.. I can do without the rush hour crazies tho..
