Title: counselling started: progress at last
Post by: jaybutterfly on June 11, 2014, 07:52:09 AM
I have started the counselling I was sent for, cognitive behavioural therapy. Yeah it's not gender dysphoria specific but they are going to be getting me some support links to gender specific stuff in the next few sessions. They still are of the mindset that I need to deal my my depression and anxiety FIRST, since a lot of it is caused by my last few years (social life breakdown, bad relationships, uni stress, home life etc).

One thing I will find is that when they asked me what I feel about myself that makes me feel I am transgender, after getting a big load of grief off my chest with the other stuff, I finally found a sentence that makes it short and to the point about my gender.

'I feel, while I know I am physically male, I feel that it is an incomplete and misleading representation of who I am on the inside and it prevents me from being who I am because of how people will react to me dressing, presenting and being who I am in an external way.'

I've just hit the nail on the head there I feel, so they are giving me phone numbers and looking into trans support for me (AT LAST), though they have stressed one thing:

don't consider any body modifications until you've completed CBT and are in as good a place as you can be psychologically. I think that's fair enough for now, since my gender isn't bothering me half as much as when i got here.

Gratz at finding the help you need. It always feels good to finally know that you are on the path.
