Title: Sublingual Estradiol and soupy goo
Post by: Autumnomous on June 20, 2014, 01:32:50 PM
Hi y'all. 10 days ago I was finally prescribed estradiol and spirno by my doctor, though I've had a few concerns. While I take the spirnolactone like normal, I've been taking the Estradiol sublingually as I heard that...

1. It's easier on your liver and...

2. It works better.

The problem is that while I've been diligent in taking it, I've discovered that despite allowing the solid form to melt completely, I'm left with a greenish soupy saliva...y mess.
The pill is small and oval and green, and is apparently generic for Estrace. I want to know if I'm doing something wrong and, if so, am I missing out on the effects of the Estardiol doing it this way. Thanks for any help.

I've taken estrofem and progynova which are both estradiol and both of them didn't have any real issues being absorbed. I don't bother putting it under my tounge anymore, i put it between my teeth and the side of the mouth in the rear. It takes hours for progynova to dissolve completely this way but, it seems like the estrogen is absorbed better I certainly don't swallow hardly any of it.

There is a reason sublingual is supposed to be sublingual.  The mucosa on the cheeks is thicker and less vascular so the absorption is less effective.  The reason it takes longer to dissolve is simply due to the fact that the salivary flow to the cheeks is poor.  If you feel like testing this out, try scratching your inside cheek with a finger nail, and then do the same in the floor of your mouth.  Which one hurt more and bled more?  (I don't really advise that you do so!)

Sublingual is advocated as a means of drug delivery as the tissues under the tongue are very thin, and very vascular, allowing drugs to pass through readily.

To the OP, yah, it's fine to swallow the goop, you're going to get a pretty consistent dose if it's left there for roughly the same amount of time each dose.

Autumnomous,

Ask your Pharmacist to dispense a generic Estradiol made by Watson.

I am taking the Watson brand of estradiol and my tablet dissolves under my tongue in about 15 minutes with no residue.
The taste is not bad either, slightly sweet !  ;D

Thank goodness I don't have to do this anymore...was soo annoying! And the ups and downs...which could negatively impact mood...in some.
