Title: When you get the munchies...

When people get hungry and are trying to keep down their carbs, what do they eat? I eat dill pickles or slices of ham. On the other hand, sometimes I've done well, and just want to take a break and splurge on comfort food - then I eat anything with melted cheese! Or peanut butter on toast, smothered in hot sauce! Or... Ice Cream! Or Tortilla chips dipped in green salsa! Or... Oh... I give up!
What do you eat?!?
What do you eat?!?

I think I hate this thread already... ;) I have to keep my diet pretty strictly regimented to keep from putting on weight, so I only eat two meals a day, nothing with sugar, and no liquid calories. And even doing all that, I could still stand to lose a few more pounds. :( If I snack at all. it has to be things with a negligible amount of calories. So basically, pickles and fresh vegetables. On the plus side, since I've been on HRT I find I don't mind eating vegetables nearly as much as I used to.

You mean hunger or taste? In general I'm really good at recognizing this so when I'm hungry I mostly take either a proper meal if it's lunch time or lets say a sandwich or yoghurt when I'm less hungry. For taste a small dezert. I prefer fruit dezerts though as I don't really like chocolate.
I know my older sister used to have serious problems with telling the difference between hunger and taste. Which of course it didn't take too long to be obvious on her. She even gave her belly a name Charles since - as she said - it deserved it's own identity. She managed to get mostly rid of it though. Still it took her much more time to kill Charles than to create it :-) .
I don't really restrict myself to specific kind of meals unless the fat percentage would be above like 15-20%. Also I prefer to avoid garlic and cream as that causes me serious pain later on. I'll take a large hamburger as well as a vegetable salad for lunch with equal chance. It's not just about the food though but also how you spend that energy. Me personally I walk like 5 km per day. So if someone will just sit on their butt the whole day... Well I think it's quite obvious what will happen unless they have super fast metabolism :-) .

If I feel my blood sugar is in the toilet, I avoid the temptation of serious carbs.
Usually a nutsnack (undocumented Jill-ism) and/or some cheese.

Wow! There is some Serious Splurging going on! I came across an article on the net from what seemed like a sensible woman who eats ZERO carbs in her diet. I have no doubt that she maintains weight where ever she wants it. I've found out that really there isn't a whole lot of need for carbs, other than the longer you go without them, the yummier they taste!
Seras <-- Planning to start HRT in the year '2041.'
Lady_Oracle <-- Plans to start HRT whenever Seras gets around to it.
Is there ANYTHING with that much fat in it? What? LARD???
If I ate a sausage, I think I'd choke to death... And if I ate a rutabaga, it would definitely kill me.
I'm with you Miyuki & Jill - it's really tough, sometimes, but the outstanding thing is that you've got so much self-control.
You should try hot sauce on that combo - seriously.

Come to a random restaurant in Czech Republic, take a look at the menu and you'll get a heart attack just from that. For anyone who thinks that US people have the highest percentage of obese here's a surprise: Czech beat them not too long ago :-) .
My mother bought me some cheese like a month ago. Since she has a bad habit of not taking a look at the nutrients I of course did and saw: 22% fat. Or a cheese butter: 17% fat. And there are meals which are nearly 100% fat! It's pretty much just fried pig fat. I die just seeing it somewhere...
EDIT: Forgot a word

Mission Figs are my favorites. They have so much fiber and digestive enzymes that the carb load is offset by it.
Raspberries are another favorite, as well as super-dark 85% chocolate. (Antioxidants, YUM! :))
I'll snack on celery with almond butter if I'm looking for something crunchy and nutty, carrots and celery with blue cheese if I'm just needing something to mindlessly munch on, or if I'm in the mood for something salty I'll go for dill pickles, sauerkraut, or kim-chee.
Occasionally I'll also make homemade buffalo chicken wings as a snack too since I crave spicy stuff a lot.
And I've lost 21 lbs since February, and 56 lbs total since starting hormones, so this stuff works!

If I am hungry I eat a proper meal.
If it is late though and I feel that hunger is going to interfere with sleep then I know a full meal is too much that late so I will usually snack on something like beef jerky, pepperoni, imitation crabmeat, mozzarella, or even rice crispier treats (lower cal than most the sweet stuff I like)
I have been losing a fair bit buy just making sure I only eat when hungry.

OMG, I wish I had your kitchen, but pepperoni and mozzarella sound dangerous!

I've been low carb for about 9-10 years. My go to snack is peanuts or almonds, especially almonds from Trader Joes. ;D I cannot honestly remember when I had a potato chip. I'll have one cookie once in a great while. I may have a burger or hot dog once a year, seriously. Other snacks are chees slices or sticks and cold cuts like ham or turkey slices.

That last post reminded me sometimes I make shortbread or oatmeal rasion cookies from scratch but only if some friends Are snacking too. Making cookies from scratch and mixing the dough by hand is probably enough of a workout to justify the calories eating them right? :p
