Title: Cis folk and understanding gender > Mine
Post by: Misato on June 28, 2014, 08:03:43 AM
I was at karaoke last night with my best friend and I had a nervous start cause there was this old lady there who was described to me to have a temper so bad she's been charged with assault in the last year. Well match that up with when I sing, I out myself because my voice is that of a male rocker left me feeling as though I was tempting fate.

My best friend's boyfriend was the host of karaoke so I got put in the queue before I selected a song. I confessed that I wasn't exactly comfortable and my best friend was all, "don't worry" and after a little bit I got up and sang. What got me is after singing Paul Simon's  Call me Al and hitting the low notes at the ending, this guy says to my friend and I, "I don't want to interrupt you ladies."

After pelting out Banditos by Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers, I did Closing Time by Semisonic and people at the bar were dancing as I sang!

O.o

I should add, in the throws of my nerves, my cisfriend shared with me how when she was young, she had bullies that said she looked like a boy. She understood, and wanted to help me with my discomfort in those moments last night.

When the planning of a baby shower of another friend of mine started, I was drafted to host it because I have a party room at my apartment.

I'm included in girl's nights out with my friends.

I'm left with sometimes I find myself thinking that cis folk know more about gender than I do. Sure there are some thick skulls out there (I do have one Starbucks barista that I think sits in judgement of me because she's so standoffish and did mis-gender me once) but as I bounce around the Midwest as an out and visible trans person, my life goes pretty smooth and I am reliably gendered appropriately. For being out, for my physical appearance and voice, cis folk seem to just treat me as the woman I am even when I do things that make my past bloody obvious.

It's quite nice actually.

Anyway, I just wanted to share some good news. :)
