Title: I worry about everything !
Post by: Rachel_words on July 11, 2014, 04:33:32 PM
Hi everyone

I've just been prescribed estradiol patches and I'm really really happy about that, it's something I've wanted for as long as I can remember. But I'm one of life's worriers and a bit of a wimp!!!

What I'm worried about is developing a DVT believe it or not. I've done the right thing and given up smoking and I don't drink alcohol.

Are patches safer than other methods of HRT? Am I worrying about this for no good reason?

I just want to enjoy taking my HRT, it's been a long time coming!!!

Sorry if I'm sounding a bit of an idiot :-)

Rachel xx

Patches are really safe. If you are young, in good shape, and don't smoke, your risk of clotting is practically the same with the patch as without. Even if you were on pills, the bioidentical estrogen that is usually prescribed today is much safer than the conjugated estrogen that used to be more commonly used.

There were several studies that showed that using the patch in prostate cancer patients did not increase cardiovascular and thromboembolic risks and they even stated in conclusion, in one of their papers, that the patch protected against the risk of thrombosis. So, I guess that's good news. :) Transdermal has also been shown to be safer than oral, especially those non bio-identical hormones in both transwomen and ciswomen. Perhaps more studies need to be done to be sure but for now, they seem safe enough.
