Title: Databases restored to Midnight on the 13th.
Post by: Susan on July 14, 2014, 03:07:00 PM
The downtime we recently experienced was caused by a database crash triggered by the server attempting to write to bad sectors located one of its primary hard drives. I attempted to perform a recovery but was unable to do so. I then performed a 6 hour bad sector scan on the drive finding 170 bad sectors out of the billions on the drive.

As a result I have restored the databases to the July 13th Backups. All messages posted since then have been lost. We are currently operating still operating off of the hard drive in question but I intend to replace it in the next few days, or at the first sign of additional problems. I felt it was important to get the site back up as soon as it was possible to do so.

Thank you so much Susan! I was very worried the site wasn't coming back after it being down for a whole day. Hope this doesn't happen again and thanks for trying so hard for us to get the site back up! *Breaths easier and a sign of relief now* Whew. haha :)

It was well timed, a moment, or more, of silence in honor of dear Nero.

Ok, I'll just ask this now vs. waiting and taking a chance and the site goes down again. (Hope it doesn't) Is there a way for us to keep in contact? You know, like another forum that's used as a back up for when this happens, FB, or SOMETHING?

Again, thank you so much Susan and anyone who helped get it back up and running!

Perhaps a official twitter especially for communicating information in such situations would be a good idea?

For those of us who aren't totally safe and out, social media can be scary.

I second this.
And I 3rd this but I'd also recommend setting up a free forum. (Free as in, you pay nothing to host it, I think those exist if I recall right) It'd only serve as a back up in emergency situations such as what happened yesterday/today with the site being down for a while. Some of us may be in such a dire need and this site is our only means of survival, I fear if it hasn't already there may come a time where one of the members or heck a none member but reads the posts here which helps them, may need the forum and because it's not there, they may do something foolish and end their life. Plus this way we all can still hang out, talk, talk about real problems that are bothering us. Never hurts to have a back up plan am I right?

EDIT: Whoops, sorry Cindy, forgot this

Thanks but if it's FB I'll have to pass. While I don't dislike the layout they've got, I DO dislike the company themselves as well as how intrusive they are with their personal info. Also, even if you delete your FB, all of your data is still stored in their servers.. plus, this is the same company that did that experiment where they deleted a TON of FB user's posts to see if it would make people more positive or more negative. They toyed with people's feelings, one of those people may have died, another may have lost a friend because of that experiment and the list goes on.

I thought this, too. If you search "down for everyone or just me" on google, there's a site that tells you if a site is down or if it's just your computer being wonky.

Glad you were able to get everything up again, Susan! Thanks for all the hard work you do around here to keep this place up and running!

I nth the official twitter idea. Even if you don't follow it, you can keep it in your favorites or something to check if you can't get on the site. I was wondering what was up, because I hadn't seen anything about maintenance, and I was getting worried.

I'm glad to see the site back up :) I just thought that it was something with my computer, because sometimes my computer hates me and does not let me get onto some websites..

Thanks for all the hard work in getting the site back up!

Thank you Susan. I didn't know how much this site has come to mean to me until it was down.

Susan

I felt like my family had cut me off .. not good.  Thank you for getting us back on line so quickly and thank you for your massive commitment behind the scenes -- which we all too often take for granted!

I was suffering Susan's withdrawals, too. I'm glad you got it working even if it is just a delay until you get a new hard disk.
