Title: hey guys, or is it hello ladies (not meant to be offensive)
Post by: goldphantom on July 25, 2014, 08:57:54 AM
I want your opinions on something that happened to me when I was in college a few years back. This is before I even knew I was transgender but I did portray myself as a feminine man.

I was friends with two other girls in my class. We were pretty close friends and we would always sit outside waiting for class to start. One day I had a falling out with them and rather than sit with me they sat with a guy who had only talked to us briefly before. Needless to say, they were doing it out of spite.

What is interesting is that when they sat next to him he said "hello ladies". I always used the term "guys". For example I would say "what are you guys up to today". I am just wondering why he would use that term. I would personally never use the term "ladies" or "gentlemen" to refer to a group of people.

I want to know why you think he would say that and what terms you use to refer to a group of women.

I would not read too much into it myself. Everyone is different.  :)

lol... I dunno. I find the mental image of a guy saying "Hello, ladies," to a pack of dogs pretty funny. Maybe it's the way he's saying it in my head.

Its more polite meaning or more respectful if the male understand respect.

But its also a way to work there pants off lol.

Yeah, that's generally how I take it when a guy says that. Like he's trying to be extra nice because he thinks it will get him somewhere.

I, if I can remember, usually try for something more gender-neutral like "hey everyone!" or "hey y'all!". A lot of the time I accidentally say "you guys", but I try and be more conscientious about it if I know that there's a trans woman included because I don't wanna come off wrong or be triggering... I can't ever bring myself to say "ladies" because it sounds really skeevy to me, and I don't wanna be one of those guys, haha.
