Title: Fasting?
Post by: dapperseb on July 31, 2014, 08:36:23 PM
I'm having my surgery a week from today and I'm kind of worried about fasting. How long do you have to fast for? I've noticed that I get sick when I don't eat regularly, that's the only reason I'm really worried about it.
I'm also super nervous to be put under. I've had 2 surgeries before, on my hip when I was 10 (about 13 years ago) and it never bothered me then, but now that I'm older with a bad anxiety disorder, I can hardly sleep at night because I'm too busy freaking out about it. I've already got it in my head to tell the doctor and anesthesiologist to do whatever they possibly can to keep me from nausea and vomiting, because that's another worry of mine. Ughhh I just want this to be over with already.

I believe for top surgery it is NPO for 12 hours. :)

Your anesthesiologist will make the decision based on your medical history, usually 10-12 hours before the surgery.
My first surgery (top) was scheduled at noon, and I was told not to eat or drink after 12 am. My second surgery  (hysto) was scheduled at 9 am, and I was told that I could eat solid foods until 3 am and drink clear liquid until 6 am.
You can ask your doctor to give you something to help with your anxiety before the surgery, and on your day of surgery, if you feel very uncomfortable, you can call the surgery center to get you into prep early so you can receive IV fluid and medication to help with your anxiety.

Oh 12 hours will not be bad at all then! I'm already fasting for almost 12 hours currently because I have my bloodwork in the morning.
I'll talk to the doctor during my pre-op to see what they can do about my anxiety. I wasn't aware there was anything they could do for it :)

My fasting period was only 12 hours, too.  Considering I went to bed early - I slept through most of that time, so it's not too bad.

Really 12 hours is nothing, I did it for a month.

I had no food after midnight, regardless of when the next day surgery was. I think mine was 11 AM or so.
I was a little concerned as I get rather shaky without food. It was okay and not a big deal.

Yeah I need to talk to my PCP because when I don't eat regularly I show symptoms of hypoglycemia. One of my close friends has it and she said I need to keep an eye on it. I just hate going to the doctor. I had to get my glucose tested this morning for my pre-surgery blood work so I guess if something is off, the doctor will let me know. I wouldn't have a problem with fasting otherwise. I normally don't eat after 6 or 7 PM on weekdays anyway and that lasts until about 7:30 the next morning before work, so I should be ok.

Well hypoglycemia is pretty easy for them. My surgery was kind of delayed and I was given the IV early. Pretty sure that it had glucose in it it. I suppose you can ask for that if the surgery is going to be very late.
