Title: Games workshop experience
Post by: Emmaline on August 28, 2014, 05:34:07 AM
Boy mode:  "what army are you collecting?"

Boy mode:  "what army are you collecting?"

Boy mode:  "what army are you collecting?"

Boy mode:  "what army are you collecting?"

GIRL mode: "hi, so who are buying for today?"

And Emma meets her new world.

*Turns the sarcasm meter up to eleven*

Oh of course because the world of gaming, war hammer, video games, comic books, dungeons and dragons, sports (not including ice skating, netball, softball and gymnastics) and fantasy leagues. Are totally male domains and girls would have no idea or interest in any of these hobbies. (Did I miss anything)

Apparently, it's time to sell my Wood Elves, High Elves, Space Wolves, Imperial Guard and Dark Eldar...

I know cis women who experience the same, "Girl Gamer? Nawwwwwwwwwww" at Fantasy Flight games.

My SO works on the other side of the counter. She will answer questions only to have the customer go find a male so they can be told the same answer by him.

Hahaahah!

Emmaline, congratulations! You've successfully burned your bridges to male privilege.

From now on:
1.  By default you suck at games.
2.  You're weird if you're deeply into scifi.
3.  You don't know anything about anything mechanical.

It's like all that knowledge has magically disappeared and your face has migrated to your chest.  :)

Lols. I am the local volunteer for a different company, Privateer Press, and out to most of my players. I also used to work for my local shop for almost a decade. I am out to the staff as well. I present in boy mode so far and have been slowly adding in women's jeans and Tshirts, using my girl voice, and getting hugs and the like as if I were a girl. Most of the players who don't know haven't said a word or given my a second glance. Too busy with their card games and such I suppose.

I am heading out to a new shop out of town for some fun this weekend. Should be interesting, and I hope I don't get the gamer andro/girl shame. I've been playing longer than many of them have been alive.

What is extra amusing about this is I actually have a massive citadel collection including original minis painter by John Blanche himself, one of which was in white dwarf and ratspike.

I sculpt minis professionally and own my own mini company.

I also turned down a job at Citadel as a digital sculptor.

It's amazing how you think you can communicate that in an eyebrow raise, isn't it?

Nothing more fun than playing around with small mind then.  :)

Good point!  It will be fun playing dumb, maybe a low cut top- then cutting them down with a precise factoid.

Tiny minds deserve it.

Just remember tiny mind.

They may be too busy looking at the low cut top and automatically dismissing you, instead of listing to the precise factoid.

As I said! the face migrates down to the chest.  Apparently you can enunciate clearly through clothing.  :)

Well you can communicate with your clothing, but somehow I think we are not talking about the same thing.

Suddenly I am thankful my local comic book shop is staffed by three girls, with only the owner being male. Makes buying so much easier no strange looks or questions at all

Im a Dark Angels/ Space wolves and almost Terminator exclusive fan myself. But I have collected random miniatures too. I gave my Prince Imrick dragon to my sister-in-law. So many hours lost painting models and miniatures.

I got rid of my Space Wolves and Hordes of Chaos a few years ago, just because I couldn't afford to play and had other things on my mind, like depression, military school for college, work, finding reasonable people to play with, etc.

I used to work in the local game store back home, and met a bare handful of girls who liked to play.  Most of the girls I talked to with GW stuff would rather paint/model and then let their bf play with what they painted.

Well warhammer has devolved into an agressive rules argument played with very sexist factions.  Hardly attractive.  Most girls I know play dnd or skirmish games like malifaux, but most are just into painting it's true.

This is something that came up in my FB feed. It's more PC Gamerish I suppose, but there's a lot of stuff about sexism.......you may have come across it before (I'll admit my interest was more the sexism than the Game aspect) but it may be of interest:

It boggles my mind when misogynistic men defend misogyny with even more misogyny.

I love Anita's work. As I become more engaged in the feminist community her work is playing a big part of illuminating what issues are important and informs what I say when I try to speak up for women and feminism.

As a transwoman putting herself out there to speak for women and feminism, I wonder when the misogyny and others calling me a "man" is going to start (not that I'm even close to Internet relevant). But I also think that as a transwoman I have a useful perspective due to being on both sides. The perspective I think is useful in this discussion is, rape.

In my male life, I knew rape was a bad thing. These gamers who want rape and violence against sexualized women to persist in video games probably know that too but, I and they know it at a academic level. They don't have practical experience from what it's like to suffer under the very real threat of rape everyday.

"Don't get yourself raped in the parking ramp!" Said a female coworker to me the other day. While discussing things with other women, tips on how to stay safe comes up in the conversation on occasion, like how to walk with your keys in your hand like Wolverine's claws. And there's the personal experiences. My very first days being out in public I had a male stranger define the word rape for me personally through his speech and advances toward me. None of those aforementioned things happened in my old life.

The effects of rape and violence against women does not affect these guys personally and that I think that they are not personally affected plays a part in their resistance to changing the situation in gaming. Not to mention that through their intense speech attacking women or feminists, some sometimes demonstrate their inclination to be violent against women without remorse, nor do they show signs that they've paused to consider they may be doing something wrong. They are doing the same behavior as a video game character kicking a woman and as a woman, I naturally identify with the female position. As a guy, I think I identified with the what-the-heck-should-I-do observer.

Anita calls out things that would be great to have a civil discussion about. That she and other feminists are instead attacked by some shows that the problems she brings up are very real, even if they don't manifest the same way that they do in video games.

The skirmish games appeal to me more currently. Infinity , Mercs , Dust mostly with some x-wing and heroclix mixed in. I hope I'm not being nosy , but I'm curious about your game company. Well curious slash jealous  ;D.

They are awesome and have their own distinct a bit dark feel, not like just "more high fantasy-style elves/goblins/insert race here" :).

Must...not buy more minis... must resist :D.

I'm usually more of an online player making it a little easier but what I like to do is pretend I don't know what is going on until I've determine how to totally trash my opponents then I bring out the big guns and then totally ruin them with playing innocent like I don't know how the game really works. May be a bit different with games like warhammer or mecwarrior. For d&d your best bet is to find a good accepting group or make your own.

Love the video but I'll bring the thread back on topic.

I'll be very interested to see how I get treated in game shops once I go FT. Even more interesting will be the response when I run a game for people and they find out I've been a GM since I was a teen and am a damn good one by all accounts. I look forward to nerd-shaming the (generally) unwashed masses at the local shops.  ;D

I wonder if these types of sexist nerds will come to realize that it's not necessarily the fact that women aren't interested in these sorts of hobbies, but rather they're repulsed by their behavior and tend not to stick around people who objectify them or refuse to believe their interest is genuine. As if Misogynistic male nerds are a trophy boyfriend to take home or something.

The lack of not only social skills but general cleanliness amongst the male gamer is a giant turn off for me. I'm really noticing it a lot lately when my gaming group gets together or I go to game stores.

I remember reading somewhere that this is the heritage from the M:tG community and the point is... the worse they smell, the less time opponent might wish to spend at the table with that particular individual... triggering mistakes and winning the game for the dirty one in the end. Kinda pointless, because wargaming should not be about winning but spending time, playing with nice people who own beautifully painted minis and playing them on the table with awesome scenery... Still, one of my best memories was a staged Apoc game with 10 players (5 vs 5) with roughly 20k points from each side. We started at 10 AM and call it a game around 9 PM (it was the middle of turn 3) and not even close to end :).

Hi, I'm Wren, and I'm a recovering Crack addict. :P

I've got a decent gaming group now for DnD (3.5 ftw!) and it turns out that one of the employees of my local store down here I have actually started hanging out with as a friend, so I just get treated like I know my stuff (which I do anyhow).
