Title: Official support for Transgenders in the Offshore Drilling industry.
Post by: Jennifer.L on September 06, 2014, 12:00:23 AM
So,  I've been going threw a work related ordeal.  And the end result is that 3 major Offshore Drilling company's to include BP have officially set pro-transgender policies.  I work out on the rigs.  And the have taken the stance that we can officially use the facilities of our gender identity.  No waiting for bottom surgery.  Just have the most basic diagnostic letter and you are clear.

It's kind of a big deal because up until now the policy had be that if your ID didn't say female. You HAD to use the boys room.  And on an oil rig this made for some really uncomfortable situations.

So I'm happy to say that at least part or the offshore oil industry supports us.

Seems like it would fit better in the trans talk board, probably why no one replied.

That's great news, congrats! How does one get one of these jobs, anyway? Do you have to have a petroleum engineering degree or something like that?

I only saw this just now. Great news! I thought BP gas stations were franchises though. Also I've been out on the rigs and I don't envy you as a trans woman out there. It can be a rough, unforgiving environment but 2 weeks on/2 weeks off was nice when I did it. But it wasn't for me.

Jennifer-

I know that you went through hell recently on your job and I know that this is a great thing to have happen. I know some oil field guys and they are all cut out of the same cloth - they are great guys but they don't really care for anyone that is different than them. Hopefully having this policy in place will open some hearts and open some minds  :)

Many of my relatives work in the oil industry, on-shore and offshore. Cis women have an extremely hard time in the industry, I can only imagine what trans women go through. This is an important victory.

This is a fantastic accomplishment Jennifer, good for you for taking leadership and accomplishing a precedent for the industry.

I too work in Oil and Gas in a large onshore service company and I am the only Trans person in. company of approx 15000 that is out and transitioned on the job.  I appreciate what you go through day to day and what you accomplished!

I am in corporate so I am in board rooms more than the field however I do spend time in the field working with operations on many things and I know the profile of the folks thier quite well

I would say it is one helluva big deal. I own trucks that run the oilfield most of the tine except for two. From my point of view though it seems like most of the people that work in the oilfield are butts. It may be different from those outside of the transportation or logistics areas of the oilfield, "cause to be completely honest I get treated like crap most of the time 'cause I bring them stuff that should have been there yesterday. FYI, not my fault when companies load you late or get the equipment ready a day after they promised. I got to where I run the other two trucks for drivers that get sick or need a day off. The oilfield trucks I just let them take them off the board until I can find a driver.

But seriously good job Jennifer, I just hope it trickles down to the rest of the oilfield trash, especially the truckdrivers.

@BrotherBen, Honestly there are very few requirements to these jobs.  Mostly it's start as a Scut-Worker and work your way up.  It helps if you have a background working on hydraulics or Electronic systems.  But you NEVER see some one with a degree or special training.  (Unless your a ships officer)  Just go to the websites and then Employment Opportunities.  PM me for the names of the companies.

@ImagineKate, Oh girl, It's been CRAZY.  But I love what I do, you know?  And don't feel bad about not wanting to do it for a living.  You have to be a bit crazy, or you will go crazy.

@Eva Marie, Ya they are a rough group.  But I refuse to let them scare me off.  They can just grow the F up.  :D

@Jess42, Oh its not really different.  Until you prove your better then them, the boys just won't respect a non-boy.  But hopefully this is a step in the right direction.

And for anyone I missed.  thank you so much.  You guys can't know just how much your support means to me.  With out you girls I don't know what I'd do.  I know I'm nver really alone, you know?
