Susan's Place Transgender Resources

I've watched a few episodes and from my ignorant cis POV, they seem to be handling the trans character well. The show overall is fine though I'm not blown away by it. I still will probably watch all of them.

Yea, there's been no glaring mistakes.  I'm halfway through and I feel about the same as you, there's enough for me to keep going but it's not spectacular.  I'm actually glad the kids' stories are so important because I actually don't identify with the trans character at all.

My partner wants to watch it together. Does it look looks like it would be good for an SO to watch?

Oh yea, they are definitely going for something that can appeal to anyone and judging by the reviews they've achieved that.

there were a few things that really bothered me in the first few episodes. Like the support group meets and mora ask people if they wanted to go out and celebrate, she asked like 3 or for people if they were interested and they were all like no I have/had an alcohol problem. I mean wtf why did they have to do that. it paints the wrong picture.

also I didn't like how the women she did end up hanging out with was like oh you got a walk this way, you got a sit this way. and saying something about how if you plan to transition you better expect to lose your family (something no one in your support group would ever say).

The main character is very well done in my opinion. and in that I could tell they really did try to make it sensitive. I just think that they portrayed the trans community wrong. what I have seen from the trans community is that we are warm, kind, and accepting as opposed to the cold, distant, and bossy which I have noticed a little bit in the show.

also her children's reactions could be very triggering if your family wasn't supportive.

I think there's sometimes a generational gap in the community.  My experience in a college support setting where I am the oldest in the group has been vastly different from at a trans group for veterans, where I was the youngest.  Based on my one (fairly negative) experience with that group that skewed older, nothing about the Transparent scenes seemed unrealistic to me.

I guess I have only experienced one support group. so that's not a whole lot to go on.

Still the whole scene with the 3 people in a row that are or were at one point alcoholics was really bothersome.

I didn't see the episode (not going to get Aprime just for that), but I have heard people tell me these EXACT things in support groups.

really that doesn't sound very supportive to me.

My support group always just says be you and do what you feel comfortable with. and as far as the family goes, I was always told that your family will surprise you, whether they react good or bad. you cannot predict their reactions.
