Title: Motoring fun
Post by: Ali girl on October 08, 2014, 05:02:03 PM
As I have looked into the hobbies shown, I was surprised to not see cars or motorcycles...  I have spent many a nights playing in the garage working on many classic and modern cars.  I am actually restoring a couple of mustangs and a 1960 MGA roadster, plus the restoration of my motorcycle.  Is there any others interested in this activity, or am I in the minority?

I am a Ford gal if you care to know.  8)

My wild thing was a 1968 American Motors AMX two seater. 290 V8, four speed, dual exhaust, manual steering, four wheel drum (not disk) brakes, and vacuum operated windshield wipers. The motor had tons of cam, so the only time there was vacuum was when you were decelerating. She was a beast.

Sounds awesome!  My driver is a fully build 94 thunderbird SC  5 speed.  One of 722...

It runs awesome and it is my prized possession.

I love cars. It's probably the main reason why I ended up a mechanical engineer. But for sheer driving fun I love my exotics and have had a few, a lotus, Maserati ad an Aston Martin. Personally I like the Aston the best. Right now I have no exotics but have settled on a pair of stingrays, a coupe and a convertible. I have been thinking lately of finding a used Porsche to equip and use for the winter, not for snow but cold days. I like doing the work myself. I take my time, work methodically and just do it. The only thing that sucks for me is having to work on the ground since my hair is very long. I have to keep it tied up and out of the way.

Ever try driving on a track? I tip ride for the first time a few years ago and it's very addictive. Once I drove on a race track I wanted to drive more. I do go to car shows mostly cars and coffee events. I am a low key but passionate car person.

I do enjoy a good exotic.  I'm more of a muscle car gal.  Boy do I know the fun (sarc) of hair.  I love to restore the classics...  I say it is making something more beautiful when I couldn't be.  ;)

So glad I'm not alone!

Sweet!  I ride a 1983 Honda Interceptor!  Have owned it for 11 years. I only have 25,000 on it because 3 kids don't fit...   :)

I love sexy cars.  I currently drive a 2003 Honda Pilot, but my mid-life crisis car is on the horizon after I get surgery.

My wife is WAY into cars.  She used to have a '66 Mustang, but drives a BMW 335i these days.

Someday, I'd like a Jaguar E-type, a 1963 Corvette Split and pretty much any Ferrari, but judging from the size of our garage, I'm guessing I'll have to do it one at a time.

I hear the garage size issues.  Our short list of in progress is my bird, bike, a 65&66 mustang, a 71 mach 1, a 68 Buick and a 69 olds cutlass.  And the MGA...

Well Suzanne,
Latex gloves are cheap, and it's a great excuse to try new nail colors if a glove fails.  :D

I'm not transitioning fully, but have noticed similar changes in my interests and hobbies than say, 5 years ago..
We used to have an awesome home, with attached multi car garage. I turned half of the garage into a shop, and the other half for cars.
Nothing as fancy as I wish, a silver Chrysler Concorde, and a small plastic(Honda) lol, for commuting.
But I'd spend hours and hours out in the garage working on the cars, and building things.

I miss blowing my nose and it coming out "#4 Honda Blue" after touching up my engine with spray paint.  :o

Now though, we have down sized, live in a smaller house with no garage. For some reason, or whatever changes I've been experiencing, I can't stand to work on cars.?
I go to the Lube shop to get the oil changed, and the tire shop to check the air pressure.

But I have a secret desire to get an off road motorcycle still.? Haha, but I could work on that in one of the spare bedrooms..!!  ;D

My interests have never really changed...  I've always been a motor head and I have been on hormones for 1 1/2 years.  Only change was a new found interest in photography... Still love my cars and doing custom paint.  Strange how that happens to some, but not others...

Another interesting thing I noticed... Before hormones I loved heels and skirts... Now I like my runners and my Diva jeans...

I had a Puch (Allstate)125,3 Triumphs(my favourite bike),a Honda and a BSA.The nearest I get to bikes these days is watching Sons of Anarchy,I'm a big  fan of Tig,Chibs and Gemma.

I thought that car was overrated.  I stole borrowed one without the owner's permission or knowledge once while I was tripping my (then) balls off in college so I didn't have to walk or take the bus to to community service.  That car totally handled like a boat, but the pickup was fairly impressive.  I hated the seats with a passion.  I gave my drummer buddy his car back the next morning with umm, a bit less gas in it.  It was really fun being followed by a cop for several miles, when I already had a 30 day suspended sentence and was on a year's probation.

I can't believe what idiocy I was once capable of.   I should have taken my other friend's '69 Camaro.

I'm totally into the car scene! I'm really good friends with the auto tech teacher at my school and I've helped work on all the cars he's brought in! I love the car scene and I hope I don't ever lose this spark of happiness when I see a good car on the road.

If I could own any car in the world right now, it would have to be a Fairlady Z, any model will be awesome.

I like the fairladys. Beautiful designs.  I loved the Subaru XT6 I owned also (alyclone?) super fun but parts became impossible.

I don't think I'll ever lose that part of me.  It's engrained into my life. ;)

I parted with my toy today.  :(  I've had it since it was a year old.  It was an 03' Nissan 350Z Touring, lightly modified, nothing obnoxious.  I babied it, only put 13k mile on it since the day I bought it. I need to fund my transition, having a car in the garage I rarely drive didn't seem logical.  Sad to see it go, but transitioning definitely outweighed the loss of a car.

I have a car that's only useful in Competition Wheel to Wheel road racing, does that count?  I know of several transgender ladies who wheel a car around pretty well.  One posts her videos on face book and lives in the United Kingdom.

As for my car: I have a BMW that I built the motor for and ran it at the SCCA Runoffs last October at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Does anyone here ever do a cars and coffee? I remember I went to one last summer in my C6 corvette and ended up hanging out with a couple of other corvette ladies and even had breakfast with them afterwards. It was a good day and some more new friends. When I came the year before that in the aston martin I was surrounded by men galore, but it seems that women like corvettes better.

Sorry for the long delay ladies.  I have been so engrossed in activities and work I have not had much internet time.

All forms are welcome.  I do enjoy road racing, and watched many autocross events also.  I just wondered if I was the only one who has not lost interest in my "male" hobbies.  Next to my family, My bird and bike are my life.  The only thing that bothers me is that I am a member of the SCCoA (Super Coupe Club of America) and will most likely have to leave that site as it is filled with many men and I'm doubting much support but that is a small price to pay.  I guess some days I just have a hard time finding my place.

im having a hard enough time trying to cobble together a cargo bicycle to worry about motorcycles of any sort, cars, trucks, boats, flying saucers, battle tanks, licenses, taxes, fees, fines, repair costs, modification costs, scam-surance, pink slips, traffic slips, certificates, and perhaps worst of all, uniformed (and uninformed) policy bureaucrats with guns, who love a good show of force for violence's own sake.

so yeah, much as i would LLOOVVEE to be able to consider having automotive hobbies, the meagerest of the meager (perhaps even to the point of  completely giving up on any sort of wheeled vehicle, and walking everywhere as an unofficial personal Law) is a rather enforced end-item for me.

Anyway, I'm around that age where I can actually start driving, and I've been thinking about getting a Honda S2000 as my first car. Thoughts?

I love cars and I always will. Even in my darkest times, driving is an amazing escape. I have a 2009 Corolla which I have installed lowered coilovers on and a hotdog exhaust. It's not a typical petrolhead car but it's low performance means I can push the limits without needing a proper track. I can heel-toe too which, combined with its nimbleness, means I can really get the most out of a twisty section in the hills. I'd love to do more to it or buy a hobby car but money and space is a real issue for those of us in apartments with mortgages.

My next car will probably be a Toyota GT86. I want rear drive, full manual box, relatively low weight, small engine, and simple design which the GT86 does brilliantly. I'll definitely be putting coilovers and an exhaust on that too, I don't think I could ever go back.

I completely rebuilt a 1954 Morris Minor which became my daily driver for the next ten years.   I kept it largely in standard condition except for putting in a late 1960s 1100cc engine, changing the final drive ratio and upgrading the brakes.  It was a lovely car to drive and I really regret selling it.
My last motorcycle was a 1990s Suzuki 500 twin I named 'Ginny' and I rode that all over the place in company with the women's motorcycle touring group I'd joined while I was still working as a social worker.  It was a great way to let the stress of my job wash out of me, but as my health problems progressed I had to give up motorbikes and after a losing battle I finally had to sell 'Ginny', she went to a good home though which eased my pain a little.

I kinda lost interest in cars and motorcycles in recent years. Pre-transition, I was obsessed with my bmw and ducati.  I had a 330 with the Dinan3 upgrade for the car and a Monster 900 for the bike. I sold the bike last year, I went to ride it one day and got a huge anxiety attack when I was pulling out. I put it away and never got back on. It's really weird, it was a huge part of my life and I dont miss it at all. I've done several solo cross country trips on it, was in a ducati club and just walked away from it. I was an instructor for the MSF for a few years also. I ended up getting fired for making out with a student after the class was over, that student is now my fiance.

I still find I have a fascination for mechanical things and fabricating things from metal, but it's directed at human powered vehicles these days.  Sometimes I find myself wistfully watching motorcycles go by on the road outside my house, but I know very well that I can't manage to ride one anymore.

I'm guessing you are in the UK because over here the GT86 is called the Scion FRS or the Subaru BRZ. It's a car I have considered a few times just picking one up for fun since they are relatively cheap, but to be honest compared to my C7 corvette it's pretty much a non-contender. I have seen some pretty nice builds of the FRS over here and there are a few body kits available. I don't see many used ones show up for sale which is the only way I would want to buy one (plus they don't sell them in the US anymore anyways).

Nope. Australia.
Something I always notice when I read car threads, though, is that I seem to be the only person who doesn't like muscle cars. Too much torque, too heavy, too wide, too soft, relatively low cornering speed, I don't like the styling, and I don't like the sound of heavy V8's. The GT86 doesn't have all the power, no, but that's exactly the attraction. I get no enjoyment out of straight line speed cars going from light to light, I love small, light cars that I can throw around and really have a go in.

I'd buy another front drive hatchback before I bought a muscle car. The GT86, for me, could only be improved if it lost 100kg or so and the engine was mounted in the middle. It's still glorious, though.

One of the things I miss is driving my dad's old Spitfire 1500. As a teenager we worked on it together - putting in Monza headers, Weber carburetors, a free flow exhaust system. We even bought some walnut wood and made a custom dash together.

God how I miss this car!

Not a lot of truck or dirt bike girls on here!?

Trucks I've had:
'70 jeep pickup motor was done put an oldsmobile 403 in it 4 speed full headers and glasspacks.  Obnoxious is that truck in one word.
'89 Scottsdale blew up the 350 put in a 400. 4 speed manual.  Stump puller.
O6 f150 on a lease.  Stupidly swamped it just prior to needing to haul 2 horses from north Carolina to Nevada.  Took the intake all apart, full of mud, took the upper intake manifold off, full of mud.  Look down into the lower manifold and mud down to the valves.  Put it back together towed the horses the 3000 miles and traded the thing in!
'05 dodge ram with Cummins motor and 6 speed manual.  Mild bolt on stuff.  I managed 2 1/4mile runs at 12.9 seconds ( not easy shifting fast with a three foot long shifter!)
62 f100 current project, in pieces, 390, 4 speed, 4X4
There are a few other trucks not fun enough to mention

Cars I've had:
'76 280z full length header, lumpy cam, bit of a beater though.
In high school the car I borrowed when I broke the jeep was a '69 mach1 mustang clone-ish ( plenty of my own knuckle skin this car ate so I count it as at least partly mine)
'03 acura RSX - miss this one, surprisingly.
There are a couple other boring ones.

Maybe all of the abuse if have handed to my vehicles I do t like them!?!?
Love working on anything mechanical!

My baby is a 2010 Silverado 3500 SRW. I have chipped it, modified the dashboard to hold my Mini Max tuner. Redid the turbo to a 90mm VFG, 8in smoke stacks. I then regeared it to a 38 spline set up. Rough Country 6in lift kit with 4in body lift. 38in Swampers. Then had the seats, dashboard, door panels and several other interior pieces rewraped in Mossy Oak Camouflage then had the black plastic replaced with carbon fiber. Warn winch up front behind a road armor brush guard that was coated in Line X and a matching road armor out back.

It's freaking massive and rolls coal like a freight train and has been rebuilt twice because I got it too hot, but I have gotten out of every hole I have gotten myself into without winching or getting a tow.

I love mechanical stuff, especially working on them. I have a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 extended cab pickup 318 cib engine  I need to overhaul the transmission and rebuild the engine, among other things, bodywork and interior work and a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 with a  318 cid engine also, can't wait to dig into that one too(ie.(maybe even make the jeep a big bad offroader, for the whole family). Some people consider them junk, I think of them as works of art in hiding, just because I will make them run again, by my own two hands, by myself :) I may even get into fixing and selling cars, lol hmmmm, maybe after graduate school, and fixing what I have first, lol. A hobby I consider it. :)

I also love the MG's.  I'm working on a 60 MGA now.  ;)

A friend of mine owned an MGA when I was in my 20s.  A truly lovely motorcar  :D

I was once told that part of transitioning would be giving up my "guy" interests and focusing only on my feminine ones.   I never really understood that - why cant I love my shoes and still love performance cars and motorcycles???   How nice to see that so many girls do!   I live in New Hampshire now so after a long string of Corvettes I am back to my roots - hot hatches.   There's nothing like the feeling of the right car for the right moment and right now I am in love with my Focus ST.  I am also still putting around on my Triumph Daytona T595 but thinking maybe a British classic, like an old Norton is more my thing now - I'll trade a few ponies for a little bit of class.

My first car -1968 MGB....I would love to have that car again!

Hugs - Miril

I had the same situation...  How I should give up cars.   Screw that! Lol

My DD is an 02 focus zx3 hatch...   Heavily modified and sitting on an SVT suspension.  Love it, but it doesn't hold a candle to my Thunderbird SC 5 speed...

Hoping the MGA will be done this spring... Then I'll be working on the 66 mustang 4 speed and the 71 Mach 1.
We have a very large list of cars in restoration.

You do love your muscle.  The SC was the only stand out in a crop of humdrum so-called performance sedans.  You dont see many on the road these days so you have a real keeper!   You really have some great projects underway.  For my part, since moving and changing jobs I really havent had much time or interest in starting a car project but I still love hearing about them.   For where I am now, a motorcycle would be a more manageable project.    Please keep us posted on how things are going!

Hugs,
Miril

My passion in cars lies in the cars that are lightweight and nimble, ones that can take corners quickly and are more focused on fun and driver ability than straight line speed and torque.
Possibly the reason why I'm more into imports such as cars like Subaru and Mitsubishi, Toyotas, and cars that are less focused on the old "No replacement for displacement" saying.

Not to mention, there's a special tone in properly done 4-pot engines that exist in no other engine layout. Take for example, the old AE86 Trueno engine, there's something in that note that just doesn't make me feel the same way with other engine notes
