In the world of just facts, driving continues to get radically safer over time.

When I studied communications at uni I learned about how the phone has primacy in conversation, so if you're talking to someone face to face and the phone rings most people will interrupt the face to face to answer the phone - in other words, whoever was calling was more important than the person in front of the speaker. And that was before mobile/cell phones. Until we can deal with that weird phenomenon the scenarios above are likely to continue to happen. Great video though!

Yeah, I know I used to drive for a living, big trucks. That is getting safer for sure but with the texting and even no hands technology, people need to pay way more attention to the road. I have seen people doing things in cars like reading newspapers, putting on makeup and texting, I am scared to drive in anything smaller than a dually. Or at least a totally metal muscle car. Pink Please. How many accidents I avoided just by paying attention to the road way ahead of me and peripheral vision and a cracked window even in the wintertime, I can't count.

I can't count how many times I've nearly been hit on my bicycle by drivers who are more interested in talking or texting on their phone than paying attention

Paying attention and watching the road is important to both your personal safety as well as the safety of the people you are sharing the road with

Sad it has to come to that.

Hmm, not really. If you're texting, then your eyes are not on the road. There are enough immediate distractions already, without those that can wait.

Texting while driving is outlawed here as well, but plenty of idiots still do it

On the flip side, I've also seen more responsible people pull over to use their phones, and I've also seen irresponsible people get pulled over by 'Johnny Law' and I understand that the fines can be pretty stiff

Here too.

On the other hand though talking on the phone isn't. Unless you are a commercial driver. I have over1.75 million safe miles on my butt. Had two accidents neither of which was my fault. No tickets, no accidents, not even a log book violation. Passed every DOT inspection that I have ever been through, truck, trailer, paperwork and so on. But a teen that just got their license can talk on the phone but me while driving a commercial vehicle can't. I've had to eat going down the road grossed out at 80,000 pounds. Poured coffee, talked on the CB and so but I and others that make a living driving with all the miles under my but can't answer a cellphone call? but a driver with less than two weeks can? Don't get me wrong because there are bad truck drivers out there, but still.... One rule should fit all when it comes to cellphones and driving.

Yeah that was graphic but not real or I don't think so. A safety film. Probably to show in Driver's Ed Classes. I have seen videos used over and over again that were filmed for safety classes and or going through orientations for different companies and all the instructors had the same thing to say, "this happened to one of our drivers". I was even in safety at a bigger trucking company and had to say the same thing. I've seen too much of the real thing and way more blood than that in real life and not clotted and thick. Believe me, the real thing is a horror show. And many times I was first to third or fourth on the scene. Sometimes all I could do was take the sheets off of my bunk and try to cover the sides and front of the vehicle and or the body if it was thrown from the vehicle. I used to carry new sheets and never use them for that one reason.

I've seen the real thing and have been a first responder also, some not too bad, others pretty nasty, never a good thing

I've never been a first responder in a professional capacity, just first on the scene as a professional driver. Or one of the first on the scene especially in the middle of the night. If there is at least five other vehicles on the scene I don't even stop especially and usually the is at least one other truck there, I don't even stop. Don't even look if I don't need to. Just watch the road ahead. I remember one time going through the panhandle of Texas on Christmas day after freezing fog all night and freezing rain all morning and after another big truck jack knifed in front of me and almost caused me to be in an accident, I came across a black Chevy Suburban. Toys in the median and a young mother dead and her baby laying lifeless in the median. I had some of those new sheets and had to use them unfortunately. Ice on the road at least 1 1/4 inch thick and I counted over 100 trucks in the median between Sayre OK to Amarillo TX. I shut down in San Jon NM. 200 some odd miles and over 12 hours to get there. That was the worst I have ever seen the whole time I drove and the absolute worst driving conditions in all the years I drove. And I have been in bad weather conditions from blizzards to floods. That was the worst I have ever seen and drove through.

I've never driven big rigs but many of my jobs included several miles of driving and making deliveries all over several California counties from the bay area (San Francisco etc) down the Mexican border, I also did a lot of driving and so forth in another place I'd rather not talk about

Anyway, we both seem to have seen some pretty gnarly stuff, glad we have made it through

OK on a lighter note. Why is everyone lucky enough to be in California except me? I have been there a lot and even lived there temporarily but my god. Ya'll make me so jealous.

Yeah driving for a living is a dangerous job. Bad areas, bad weather, traffic. I think being a cop, with a weapon for self defense (don't have a firearm in a commercial vehicle or at least one that someone can find) or a pilot is a little safer than running up and down the roads for a living. I know I would rather fly than drive or ride a bus. Not to mention picking up in a place like Lerado TX and they want you to pull away form the dock and before you can even get to the back of the trailer they have the doors closed and sealed. HMMM. Did that to me once and I made them break their seal and I opened the doors and checked the load. They didn't like that but I need to see how it is loaded so I know how I can drive it plus I didn't want any surprises from the checkpoint with the border patrol.

I left California about nine years ago, mostly do to injuries incurred but also the overcrowding, hectic traffic, rampant violence and drug trade had a lot to do that

But even the small townish city I moved to up here in the Great North West isn't without it's problems, plenty of mischief to keep an eye out for here as well

I never thought I'd live in the L.A. area but life had other plans for me. It took some getting used to but I like it here now. Come on in, the water's fine!  :)

Believe me. I would love to but the taxes. I would do like all the stars and have permanent residence in a low tax state and have a place there. Just ain't the right time yet. When it is I will be there.

The other pink muscle car fan here.A Duster,Demon or 70 Superbee in pink has been on my car wish list for a long time.I used to be a bus driver for 10 years and used to see people driving and texting all the time

Yeah, for me a '69 Camaro, hot pink with white racing stripes and a white interior trimmed in pink. Wonder what that says about me?
