Title: Weird effect of progesterone or just crazy?
Post by: NightshadeVixen on October 28, 2014, 12:23:30 AM
So when I started HRT I would get the occasional cramps for a few days and they'd go away. Mentioned this to my doctor and they said most likely IBS. I've recently had progesterone added and do a cycle with it but when I stop taking it I get cramps bad and muscle spasms. It feels like how women describe periods sometimes and while I think I'm a special snowflake I don't really think I'm special enough to magically be able to have periods. I have mentioned my issues to my doctor but she was more concerned that progesterone increases my sex drive to a point that makes me a bit uncomfortable but I said it was worth it for potential benefits. I can't just go see another doctor either because there aren't many options here. So my question is has anyone else gotten physical period symptoms while on progesterone cycle? This has been really bugging me because idk if I should be worried or not... Maybe my body is crazy or perhaps I'm crazy idk.

PS I'm not really new I was a bit of a lurker that rarely posted anything and ended up deleting and remaking my account.

If you have cramps you probably need to drink more water. If you are concerned you really should see another doctor for a second opinion.

I usually stay pretty well hydrated. I live in the desert and grew up here so I drink more then I feel thirsty for usually. The cramps are one thing though. It's crazy but it does feel like a period which I was hoping someone would say they get the same reaction. If I'm really alone in this then it's pretty scary. A period is the best word I can use to describe the feeling but I do know it isn't possible without some extremely rare intersex condition. The reason I made this post was to see if it's serious enough for me to push on getting it checked.

I'd go and see another doctor but that isn't really an option. Small town without much in the way of doctor options. I'm lucky my current doctor didn't tell me to get lost and was willing to treat me. To be honest though she just writes me whatever prescription I ask for so I'm pretty much DIY on hormones but insurance is covering the bill for now. (Not good I know but there really isn't many options.)

A women's cramps originate from the uterus, so unless you have one that you don't know about....

I seriously doubt I have one. Idk what the odds are of such a thing but there's no way I'd have a uterus. I think maybe my body is just confused or something but I'll be sure to push for answers as this is kinda weird and I'm a bit worried.

I did a search and found that some ciswomen taking progesterone supplements while pregnant are also experiencing excruciating cramps, but again, the cramps seem to be coming from the uterus/ovaries. (I also took these supplements but had no cramps that I can remember...)

Another possibility is that the hormone is affecting your bowels, giving you awful intestinal cramps. But I think you would have noticed your bowel movements change a bit if that were the cause of the cramps. i.e. constipation is a common PMS problem for biological females.

I was always very inconsistent with bowel issues but since starting progesterone I've become more regular. Overall HRT has helped me with a lot of little issues I've had like consistently lower energy. (People have pointed out to me in the past that I get worn out way too easily.)

I'm going to. The fact that I'm alone in this has me concerned.

I usually apply a progesterone oil for a few weeks in a row and have to back off as it seems to affect all of my muscles and joints with stiffness. I let up for about a week and the stiffness is gone. Other than that I like the extra smooth skin and breast fullness and big butt that it offers so I just deal with the odd side effects.

A postop girlfriend of mine of progesterone cyclic HRT had cramps but I suspect they were psycho somatic in origin for her...
Yea I don't think these are psycho somatic for me. I've been looking up a lot of intersex related stuff and this had started me really questioning if I am. It would fit really well and explain a lot of things in my life but I'm not about to jump to any conclusion without tests. I should probably go ask in the intersex section and make a post there as they would know more then me. A big part of me wants to bury my head in the sand and not think about it but I really do need to figure it out and am currently having all my hormones checked. Still waiting nervously on results.

maybe you should see a doctor to have it checked out.
when I was young and rash, I self medicated and screwed up my liver and developed gallstones. it turned out my frequent headaches and yellowed eyes were caused by an improper hormones regimen
My HRT plan is pretty standard and widely used but have a test already being done that will test for liver issues and make sure I'm healthy to continue hormone use.

It's a huge relief to hear that someone else is getting this but I can't get any imaging tests done because my doctor refused. I guess I need a hernia or a mass to get one and my insurance is picky. I'm honestly not sure what to do now. I mean I really want answers but I guess I can't get them via my doctor. I guess I can try the ER and make a bigger deal out of it then it is but I'd feel kinda bad about doing that. I'll have to wait till my next shark week I guess to get the answers I need.

Try a different doctor.
