Title: Good therapists in NC
Post by: Ariel Renée on November 06, 2014, 07:11:40 AM
I am looking to start my journey, so i am looking for someone to talk to about my feelings.  I am living in Durham NC, and am asking people from the area who they recommend for therapy.  I am looking mainly into three things.Cost (I am paying out of pocket as i do not have health insurance at the moment), and someone who wont make it a drawn out process (i already planned on the timetable to spend at least 3 to 6 months preparing for HRT).  Thanks to all of you for your advise

I do online therapy with someone based in NC. She has a physical office, but I'm not entirely sure where it is located. Send me a message if you would like her contact information. I'd be happy to put you in touch.

The only one I know of in NC is Melissa Leonhardt.  She does online therapy too and from what I've heard, she's not expensive to go to.

I do online sessions with Melissa. She's great - easy to talk to, very supportive, and affordable.

unfortunately after 3 email attempts Melissa never got back in touch with me, so i had to find someone local...She seems great...she only does gender therapy, and she is not looking to create a ladder for me to climb, but to be a guide for me in my transition.  Thanks everyone for the advise though :-)

That is what happened to me unfortunately.  When I was first looking for an online therapist I contacted her. but she never replied.  I did manage to find a good one though and got my top surgery letter in three sessions.

I was concerned about that when I first e-mailed her. It ultimately took 2 days to get in touch and another to set my appointment. I know she has a very heavy client load at the moment.

It's good that you found someone else though! You'll have to let us know how it goes.

I see Shana Cole at Tree of Life in Greensboro. From my understanding she is very well respected in the LGBT community and she has done quite a bit for me. Good luck!

Korie;

I have been speaking with Shana through email and what i love is that she actually let me talk a little about what im feeling and she gave me comments back.  The other doctors i have talked to have not seemed as interested in hearing my initial thoughts until i booked a screening (One even refused to answer my emails written after the fact).

I also am talking to a woman name Jocie Sweeney in Charlotte...She is not as experienced but she gives me a better rate and is making a real effort to help me keep the insurance from charging me....Im conflicted about which one to go with now

From my understanding experience and expertise is the best thing for us especially when starting this journey. I am not familiar with Jocie but I have had nothing less than a first class experience with Shana. I really wouldn't let budget stop me from getting the best help I could get.
