I've looked at a lot of before and after photos of FFS with jaw contouring and unless their jawline is really bad to begin with I don't really notice much of a difference.

I have a pretty big chin and want to get contouring done on it, but my jawline isn't that bad, so I don't want to spend money I can use for other procedures.

Thoughts?

It's one of those things that seems - to me, at least - like a lot of pain and expense for very little gain.  I have a squareish jaw, but even square or prominent jaws aren't unusual for females.  It's not as if many people look at someone and say, "Ugh, look at that girl's jaw. I bet she used to be a guy."

There are some tell-tale male facial features, but I've never really though of the jaw as being one of them.  Chin, sure; few girls have a superhero chin, but the jaw itself, I'm not convinced that it's money well spent considering everything else we could legitimately spend money on, such as nose, forehead, eyes, hairline, etc.  I also have a strange worry that reshaping the jaw would weaken it, and I imagine it cracking really easily.  Unfounded?

Procedures never exist in a vacuum. The need for one depends on facial harmony. Generally, if your chin is being reshaped (and not just burred), some work on the jaw is necessary to achieve harmony. The passability/beauty of the jaw also depends on other factors like lateral cheekbone projection and face length.

Getting opinions from various surgeons might help you understand how necessary the matter is for you. Maybe ask them to justify their opinions, too.

I have a blocky jaw that does not compliment my chin. That's why I am going to have the rear corners of my lower jaw smoothed. Odd thing is I thought my chin needed some kind of reduction, when in fact 2 different FFS surgeons told me my chin is recessed and suggested an implant.

I can vouch for jaw re-contouring.... I had it done with Dr. Bensimon in Montreal, and it totally made the difference!! I used to have such a horrid square jaw!! Honestly though, I think if it really bothers you, you should go for it! =)!! <3

For me  it was an absolute must have. While 1 week out of FFS it looks so much better, rounded and less jarring to me as it was pretty prominent...

How is the recovery from jaw recontouring?  Can you still move your mouth to eat/talk?

In my case, pain was minimal, I would rate it at a <1 on a 1-10 with very minimal decreasing numbness under the jaw line forward of the under chin incision to just aft of the back side of the jawbone (a distance of about an inch or so. My Dr actually far exceeded my expectations on the amount of reduction of forward projection as well as height. Swelling has been very low. Bruising was and is non existent. The actual jaw line has normal sensation and 0 pain on palpitation (not jamming fingers against it just lightly pressing along jawline with fingertip. This is at 11 days post op...

Again, for me it was an essential item and I am very pleased with the result even at less than 2 weeks post op.

I am worried about this too. I feel like I don't need a jaw reduction, yet my chin is VERY bulky. It does look masculine and in order to reduce my chin, I am sure I am going to have to mess with my jawline a little bit. The whole procedure is $12,000 for me to do my chin and my jaw..

I love my jaw now.  It wasn't TERRIBLE before, but now It's one of my best features.  Having it done was priceless.  If I had to do it over, there would be no question.  I am so happy with my new jaw.

Recovery was tough at first, and very uncomfortable, but I wouldn't call it painful.  I was diligent with taking meds at the correct intervals and I think I had switched to just over the counter stuff after two days.  After two weeks I was able to open my mouth enough to fit a piece of sushi inside.  I think I returned to work around day 12, though I probably could have a bit sooner.  I was super swollen for a long time!  At week two I looked approximately normal (I felt comfortable enough to go out to a club, even), and at a month I was slightly puffier that usual.  It really did take about a full six months for the swelling to disappear completely.  The upside of this: there is never a sudden drastic change to your appearance, and people you see every day won't necessarily know that you've had anything done.
