Title: eh... just hrt question
Post by: Alexis2107 on November 13, 2014, 07:49:35 PM
I can't get real good answer.. but I have estradiol.... doctor said to take it, but didnt say how... so I started taking as a pill... but read some where, unsure where, that people take it by placing it under their tongue... so I have done this a couple times, and when I do .. take it this way, I get like a little "rush" of emotions and excitement like feelings, goose bumps, etc... like minutes afterwards... where as just taking it as a pill, I don't.... so I am at odds trying to figure out which way is best... if asking me, would be taking under the tongue... but I am not sure if that should be good or not? grrr -_-

What is the exact name of the medicine ? Usualy the sublingual version of the pill indicate in the name that it's sublingual.

The sublingual version act very concentrated for the first 2 hours so maybe you could feel those "rush" but the fact that this rush stop is pretty normal as the concentration is about 1/5 after those 2 hours. The effect of the E doesn't stop because the "rush" stop. This rush is probably caused by the concentrated dose that sublingual bring to your body at once.

The swallow version keep a constant concentration, lowering the bad side effects (as hot flashes and others). The swallow version may seem slower to some peoples as the absence of spikes in concentration doesn't make them feel any effects in the short run. In the long run it do the same thing as the above.

I have been taking estradiol for over 8 months and iv never heard that :/ i have heard that you SHOULDNT do that because it releases all at once into your system and that could be bad. i would suggest talking to your endo about it.

Do your pill look like this?

(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.ddccdn.com%2Fimages%2Fpills%2Fmmx%2Ft100539f%2Festradiol.jpg&hash=149ba40517346a4c3883a70903f4f7d8c9f7fde5)

Well Teva, is a generic brand and looking to McKesson list they do not seem to produce sublingual version of the pill. The only version of estradiol they seem to produce is a copy of Estrace which need to be swallowed.

Will just swallow it until/unless doctor says otherwise.

The point of taking oral medication sublingually  is to put the medication directly into your bloodstream.  This does two things.  As liz mentioned, it does speed up delivery and also somewhat reduce the total lifespan of that dose in your system as you don't have the buffer of digestion to make it take longer.

The primary reason to take the estradiol sublingually however is to avoid having the medication be digested and processed by your liver in the first place.  The digestion of E changes the way your liver functions, which changes the way your blood clots and increases the risk of DVT.  This is mostly an issue for those who are later in life, and those who smoke.  The increase in risk is minimal for younger people - however it is a real risk to consider for everyone.  Taking E pellets sublingually reduces the effect on your blood clotting process while still allowing you to use what is typically the cheapest possible delivery method to purchase at this time.

In my experience, taking pills designed to be swallowed sublingually is a very nasty, annoying process which doesn't taste so great and consumes a lot of time.  :)  I did not find it to be worth it for the time I was prescribed oral medications.  Your mileage may vary.

I'd discuss it with your doctor and follow their advice... it's possible they can prescribe you a pill designed to be dissolved, in which case yay because those are usually much easier to use that way.

Can't help with right or wrong oral method... I take Premarin, Provera and Aldactone (Spiro) and have for last 10~11 years with slow but good results... Liver, Kidneys and all key indicators are good..., however looking to increase dose levels, non pill reduction in testosterone and less pills... But general well being depends on you... I think I must be fairly healthy, but certainly keep plenty of blood tests etc going for early issues, if they transpire. Will try the under tongue till dissolve trick... Sounds like a good buzz :)

Love Katy

I busted my liver OD unsupervised. 25 years old, billary tracts severely jammed up with stones. I can't eat oily food now.

Oh yikes.... sorry to hear that... accidentally OD's or?

That estradiol is the one I took and it dissolves easily under the tongue. No problem taking it sublingually and it dissolves in a few minutes. The big name pharmacies carry it as a generic. In my case I got it from rite-aid. Teva seems to be a big supplier of theirs. All my meds are generic and are made by Teva.

Under the tongue is usually better as it avoids the first pass of the liver. The liver metabolizes estradiol into estrone and therefore you "lose" most of it.
