Title: How to pay for MTF transition in college
Post by: AshleyJordan on November 23, 2014, 12:37:13 AM
hello! I plan on transitioning during college and was wondering, do you have any ideas how I can pay for my transition while in college? I plan on beginning asap on hrt and want to do srs as soon as possible as well, and preferably while still in college, any ideas on how to do this? This includes everything from wardrobe to hormones, to therapist, to srs as well, would I be able to get insurance to pay for the medical part? Or would I be able to get a loan for it?

The first option I would try is to see if your school offers student insurance that covers HRT or more.  Student plans are usually pretty affordable and more and more are starting to include trans coverage.

First, slow way down. I went to the Oklahoma State University. Their program is this. Therapy for 6 months ($10.00 a session), then presenting as your target sex including walking around campus to be evaluated. Then if you meet the criteria you are given an HRT letter. They require therapy WHILE undergoing HRT for one year then they issue the final two letters for your SRS. It does not happen overnight and the process may feel long, but they are not gate keepers, but true professionals who want to see you succeed without regrets. Medical plan does include trans care. The University mainly handles therapy and letter issuance. You will have to travel for any SRS.  :)

Do you know if the university of Oklahoma offers a plan like that? And does Oklahoma state cover most of the srs cost as well?

Not sure, but I can check for you. Give me a day or two on it.  :)

Finding insurance to pay for it is a frustrating task.  Even in areas that require insurance to cover SRS, it is hard to find a surgeon.  I know you're in college and most likely not making the best of $$ at the moment.. but for me, I am just saving for the next couple of years and see what happens.  If I cannot find insurance to pay for it, I'll have the money then to do it but I would rather put the money towards child adoption or downpayment on a house.  If you can get your HRT paid for by insurance, which is required by US law now, you are just one step closer :)
