Title: Shop by Width or by Height?

I'm sure I'm not the only one here with a few more inches than they'd like. I've always worn huge clothes, in a way. Length-wise, I'm constantly pulling at the bottoms of my XL shirts, but width-wise, even my girl friends' Small shirts aren't quite form-fitting. I doubt I'll find much (especially within certain genres...) that fits both ways, so which is more important? Do you shop for things by their X-scale or their Y-scale?
