Quote from: Makenzie on November 24, 2014, 07:49:17 PMThe first thing you should be prepared for is nothing in transition happens ASAP. It is a long, tedious and very expensive journey. You should concentrate on parental support because right now they would have to sign off on anything you decide to do from Therapy and hormones up to surgery. You should work on preparing what you will say to your parents number one. The other things will follow if they are supportive, otherwise it will be 18 or 21 before you can begin. :)

My surgery was 9 days after my 65th birthday, and that was 22 months ago. It was not until I was nearly in my 50's that science and practicality got together, and I could accept that surgery was not a want, but a sincere need.
As far as your getting it done decades before it was an option, it is as Jessica said, Even with a perfectly accepting and enabling family you are looking at years still before it will be a done deal since you will need the counseling, hormone, and other preparation just to be ready to have the referrals to book your surgery, and many many of the surgeons today have year long lists. Before surgery, get as much enjoyment of life as you can pre-op, because I can tell you today that SRS is the smallest and least time consuming part of your transition and life itself.
Be ready to grab a heavy load of patience, which I know teenagers do not have a liking for, but gosh I wish I could go back and do things a little sooner.

If everything goes according to plan (which hopefully it will)
I'll have had SRS before my 21st birthday :)
But I completely agree the most important thing for you is parental acceptance and support, because that will make your life so much easier and it will mean you can start properly before you turn 18, which can make a world of difference :)

I had two surgeries, both when I was only 21 years old. Some may be envious of such an early time-frame, but the happiness lasted less than two years and I ended up feeling deeply regretful and rather wish my doctors had made me wait a bit longer..

I was 34... but I'd only decided I was trans and started transition 2 years before, so that's not so bad. It was still getting progressively harder, and that second year was tough.

Haven't had it yet, but will at the ripe old age of 22; planned and scheduled for May 2015. Can't ask for a better graduation present than the gift I've needed for 22 years!
Jo, hope your plans work out better than mine! I was hoping to have it around 18 or 19 according to my own personal plan, but that's a story for another day.

well Im 18 :P
and at this point I already have $1900 in my 'Vagina' bank account (its actually what I called it XD)
By the time I actually go in for surgery (mid/late 2016 to early 2017) I should have between $7000 and $10000 and my Grandmother has said that if worse comes to worse i can borrow the money off her, on top of that my whole stay in hospital and about $5000- $7000 of the cost of the actual surgery will be covered by my parents insurance + maybe the anesthetist (not sure on that one :) )
...
So all in all, money wise at least I think my plan is pretty solid :)
(hopefully it doesn't fall through) :P

Jeez at age 15 - 25 I was going through hrt, boyfriends, school, bad habits, and saving up which was difficult because real life happens and bills and dealing with bf's and family issues.
Trust me, if you're lucky enough to get past all that and still have close to $17000 - $25000 between the ages of 15-25, then I'd say you're strong and resist temptation very well or you probably robbed a bank or stole someone's money lol jk. But it is tough to save for srs at that age not to mention all the issues living through transition with family and friends and society and trying to survive.
Life is really tough while in transition. I thought, "oh I'll get a good job, save up money and also look fabulous and date guys and maybe have someone donate to my cause, and also get a degree, then my family will have to support me and if not then I can live with my friends till I get a job for free" ha! I fooled myself and I'm now 31 and I started hrt at age 16 and it's been a long journey. Got my 2 degrees in pharmacy and computer networking and administrative and got a good paying job and started saving and dropped all the dating to focus on myself at the age of 29.
Then I met my fiance who helped me with paying half of my surgery. Now I'm 3 weeks post op and just got home. Not to mention my flight home was very unpleasant due to the new vag still healing and still feeling in pain and couldn't still sit properly and still can't.
One day you'll get it. Just don't rush it. The best you could do now is be on hrt, go to school, graduate, go to college, get a good paying job, and start saving. Leave the love life behind till later unless the guy is donating to your cause and well-being

I was 52 last year when I had SRS.
When I was 15, nothing was further from my mind. The only trans feelings I had back then were a vague unhappiness that I didn't have a female body and an interest in having mostly female friends.

Now almost 20 month post and wish it could have been something possible in my teens.
I digress.

I have a similar background. I completed my B.Eng honors but no one in my country is willing to hire trans engineers. no EEOC to protect me, "equality affirming " trade union would not employ me in a grad role... I digress.
I'll be 33 when I have srs in six weeks time.
earlier in my life I wish I could have done it earlier. but now I have no regrets. alot of good things did happen even on the road full of speed bumps.
At age 20 I was trying to find ways of getting srs but it didn't happen. There were just too many things in the way. The most I ever saved up at a young age was $3000 lol and bills had to be paid so it was tough to save up. I even at one point thought of escorting and I did and that's when my life got miserable. Never again.
Getting a career and job was already tough enough since not many respected or recognized Transgender working in the field.

i am quite a ways away from being able to get it. but if things go according to plan. i should be able to afford it by the age of 32. i "could" do it right around the age of 31 if i really push it. but id rather wait till 32/33 and have a more comfortable time. and a longer period off of work for recovery. figuring around 32/33 to take about 9 months off work, and get srs, and either vocal, or facial, depending on how much hrt has an effect. but before my 33rd birthday i will be able to at minimum

I can start HRT anytime I want now, just need to sign consent. I'm probably going to give it a try, but how far into transition I get, well, I'm not really sure. I'll likely give it 2 years before FFS (28), 3 for SRS (29), and 4 for top surgery (30). I could end up stopping HRT in two weeks, or I could have everything done faster than anticipated with a couple years. Still all up in the air with me, have no clue really...

It's best if we leave that alone and not discuss it. It's basically like selling your body which should not be an option for you. It will only cause misery and risk that could cost you your life

Same here :) I was 24 when I got my correction. But that was only possible at that age because it was covered by insurance - if not for that, it would have taken me some more years to get some money, I may have dropped my education to get that money sooner - that would not have been nice.

Cool. More in the early 20-someting range :) - Yay - this seems to catch on. I remember I was one of only 3 or so in the city who was that age
