Title: Ab workouts post-op
Post by: ifanal on November 27, 2014, 04:54:03 PM
My surgery's coming up a week from Monday (!!!!!) and I am beyond excited. I have a question about post-op workouts which might come off as totally vain, so you'll have to forgive me. I've always been a pretty scrawny guy, and getting some muscle definition in my abs and biceps after I started T was one of the changes that really started making me feel better about my body. (I'm not talking about serious muscle here -- I'm still a scrawny little thing :) -- but still a pretty noticeable change that made me see a more masculine figure in the mirror.)

As excited as I am for the surgery, I'm not so thrilled about not being able to exercise for an extended period of time and losing a lot of that new muscle mass. I'm guessing losing muscle in your upper arms and pecs is pretty inevitable, but do any of you guys have recommendations for how and how soon I can start working on my abs without jeopardizing the surgery results? Are there abdominal exercises that any of you found helpful during the recover period. (In case it's relevant, I'm doing peri -- not sure if that makes a difference.)

Thanks, guys! And this forum is amazing.

As soon as you feel like it.
I remembered I started to do light cardio after 2 weeks and some weights that don't involve too much movement like curls. By the time of three weeks post op i was able to do anything but I waited until about 4 weeks post op to lift heavy and do pull ups. Probably didn't try any chest centered workout until the 6 week point.
Provided that you eat enough protein and calories, it is hard to lose much muscle mass in so short period of time, especially for young people.

I didn't lose that much muscle mass either (and I am not exactly a young guy-- okay except in my mind). But it didn't take me that long to build up again. It was more a matter of having to take a bit of time building reps again but that's more discipline than strength.
