Title: Spiro with Food
Post by: Newgirl Dani on November 29, 2014, 04:03:30 PM
Just learned something new (wish it was sooner, been on this 5 months).  When I had my first script filled, the pharmacist placed a big label "TAKE WITH FOOD" on the bottle.  Naturally I asked, "Is this to help with absorption or is it to prevent stomach upset?"  He said "To prevent stomach upset."  Well I have a new procedure coming up and was checking info on Spiro and found that the reason is is that it increases the bioavailibility of the spiro.  Oh well, at least I did find out.  Apparently the food slows down its entrance into the liver which keeps it in the system longer (Spiro and its three metabolites.)  I always took it first thing when waking and late afternoon/early evening, both empty stomach times.  Had to let you all know, unless I was the only one who didnt.  ::)   Dani

P.S.  If you want to do the exact search as I did, Google........spironolactone  "with food"  second or third down is the bioavailability link.

I found the below information. I never knew, thanks.

http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CCkQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nhrmc.org%2Fdocuments%2Fpatient%2520education%2Fspironolactone.pdf&ei=EnR6VITyEJPhsATtnoGwDA&usg=AFQjCNE5eC9RauvOqinSMYhXNIJzAWfTZg

Food can increase absorption of
spironolactone. Spironolactone should be
taken always with food or always without food.
Use alcohol cautiously. Alcohol may increase
drowsiness and dizziness while you are taking
hydrochlorothiazide and spironolactone.
Avoid becoming overheated during exercise
and in hot weather. Overheating can lead to
dehydration while taking spironolactone.

For the first few months I would take it by itself & I was fine at first but then I started feeling nauseous as hell & realized it always started about an hour after I took my spiro. I tried taking it with food one day & my upset stomachs went away. So, next to the that benefit, it also keeps it in my system longer, too?? That's pretty nice :3 Thanks!

Thank you so much for researching this and posting about it.
My doctor never said anything about it, but my pharmacist also did.

I always wondered why it was suppose to be with food, but I guess never enough to Google it (which now that I point it out, just seems kind of lazy... oh well!). I take it in the morning, and am not a huge breakfast person, so have always, well, always only being a month... :)... just taken it on an empty stomach, but I'll have to change my routine now for sure.

Thanks again,
Giselle Marie

Wait, Always with or always without food? I don't get it. So like, one or the other but not switching between the two?

Great information. I'm getting ready to start my HRT. Looking for any and all pointers that I can find to help it go more smoothly.

So that's why I'm feeling nauseous now. Good to know. Gonna eat breakfast as soon as I get in the office.

Like Kova is thinking..."huh?!?!"

I read the link and it says to take with food all the time and without food all the time... but, if you take it WITH food, it gets absorbed quickly... so is it good or bad to be absorbed quickly?

When I ate breakfast I noticed a big difference. All the nauseousness went away. I mean I thought it was just the bus ride this morning but I have to check myself since I'm basically on a whole new medication regimen now, and a different hormone balance. :)

I'll bring this up when I return for my 2 week follow up.

Just noticed on my Prescription bottles, it used to say take with food if nausea or upset stomach occurs but the new bottle I was given yesterday now says "Take with food.."

In terms of bio-availability, Spiro's bioavailability is already quite high so I don't think food will make a significant difference but if it helps with nausea, then definitely worthwhile. :)
