Title: How does HRT work??
Post by: fitzyfoop on December 03, 2014, 08:41:51 AM
By this I mean, how do you get the hormones into your body? Just curious!
Thanks,
Natty

Hi Natty,

Nature is amazing in the sense it has given the human species either gonads or ovaries. This is responsible for Testosterone or Eostrogen. It's much more complicated than that so let's just move on...

So you want to introduce the sex hormone of the opposite sex...

Well there are a number of ways, injection, oral (tablet) or patch.. Any others girls/guys?

So the first step if your wanting to seek HRT is to speak with a Psychologist or gender Cousillor. From there you will be referred to an Endocrynologist whom can prescribe hormone replacement therapy for you.

Hope this helps answer your question

In form of -

pills:
oral administration - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oral_administration :
swallowed
sublingual (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sublingual_administration) (dissolving under the tongue)
buccal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buccal_administration) (dissolving inside the cheek)
sublabial (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sublabial_administration) (dissolving under the lip - usually the upper lip due to less saliva in that area)

if swallowed the hormones pass through the liver, thus reducing the amount of unaltered hormones reaching the blood stream

patches or gel:
transdermal  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transdermal)

as intramuscular (IM) injections (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intramuscular_injection)

or as subdermal contraceptive implant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contraceptive_implant) (like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nexplanon)

There are a couple of girls on here that mentioned pellet implants, but no one I've met in person has ever heard of this method. One of them transitioned like 30 years ago and does everything in her power to help people in the Atlanta area figure everything out. She knows most of the doctors and has seen the results.

I will be on the patch soon. As a heads up, where is the best place on the body to place the patch for the best possible absorption?

either gonads or ovaries

Slight correction. Gonads are the reproductive sex organs. These include ovaries for women and testicles for men. Ovaries are gonads, just as are testicles.

I read from studies that buttocks seem to be best BUT please check with your doctor. ;)
