Okay, so I just became entirely obsessed with the Firefly franchise, and I can't find anyone to geek out about it with me, so I thought that there may be some Browncoats among us. <|:)
Also, let me start by saying River Tam is possibly the most awesome, badass, deep, likeable character ever. (duh)
WHY DID FOX CANCEL THE SHOW!!!???!!!!
WHYYYY!!!!??????

They cancelled it because hardly anyone was watching it - mind you they had it on at some ungodly hour, played the episodes out of order and frequently didn't show it at the advertised time due to something more important like football. Also, they cancelled it because they're Fox... no further reason needed really.

Fellow browncoat here. Yes, Fox mucked it up (as they did with Dollhouse and a number of other interesting shows) for reasons only known to Fox.
It's been a long time since it was on, and I followed some of the other actors here and there, watched Castle a bit, Sarah Conner Chronicles

Ms. Grace: yeah, it kind of sucks. <|:P Also I heard that they aired the episodes out of order and that didn't really help much...
AttackDonut: uuuggghhh fox nooooo
I need more firefly in my life lol
also, River. just...River. I'm such a sucker for waif characters. lol
Things I love about River Tam and her portrayal:
-her hair is always greasy and unclean, because she doesn't take care of it... unlike a lot of shows/movies where the female characters always look clean even when they shouldn't, River's hair really embodies the fact that she has much more pressing things to spend energy on than hygene. I like that about Firefly, it doesn't cover up the fact that you'll get dirty in that kind of situation. Of course, Inara always looks clean, but given her line of work it makes sense that she would pay more attention to her apperence.
-She's still brilliant through her insanity. In a lot of cases, mental patients are in fact extremely intelligent, but people can't see through the offputting exterior. Van Gough, for example, was bipolar, and most people in his time couldn't see past that to his giftedness.
-Her fight sequences are dancelike and graceful, which shows off her affinity for dance. Summer Glau, her actor, was actually a famous dancer before her part on Firefly, and it really shows.
-She has no real love interest. She's portrayed as a brilliant, insane psychic badass child, and her struggle is mainly internal. Making some sort of love interest for her would totally degrade that. Also, her relationship with Simon is entirely familial, which accentuates the fact that she is young and needs a brother more than a romantic partner.
-Her uncanny prophetic phrases are layered with meaning, such that there are multiple meanings that can be brought from a single line. This really shows her visceral understanding of events and how they all tie together in her consciousness.
She is my favorite!!!
What's yours?

Inara. ::) Goddess. I did like Kaylee but her character was a bit too bland, plus I wasn't into mechanics...um, not that I was into escorting...
I actually came to the show backwards. Saw the movie in the cinema before the TV show which I had to wait to see on DVD (at least I got to see it in the right order). That was some ten (or more?) years ago now. I liked it but there wasn't much or enough to really get into in a big way, not for me anyway. Have read a lot of the Dark Horse comics although none of them really capture the essence of the show. :-\

Yup, I'm a Browncoat! I even have the board game and the comic books. I might like Firefly just a little bit.
Quote from: Ms Grace on December 07, 2014, 04:44:48 PMMost of them don't, no. I think the new ones (Serenity: Leaves on the Wind) fit in well with the show, though. Give them a try if you haven't yet.

I too saw it backwards, finding the movie one afternoon and figuring what the heck. Amazing film.
Didn't know there was a boardgame, but there is a MMO a company is trying to get up and running.
Has it really been 10 years ago?
