Title: Voice change à gogo
Post by: Illuminess on January 10, 2015, 07:12:35 AM
I haven't really put a lot of time into training my voice, mainly due to never being alone at home. I'd feel silly doing exercises knowing that someone could be listening in. I downloaded one of those EVA apps for Pitch, and it's been helpful here and there, when I have rare moments to play around with it. BUT, I must be doing something right, because a friend of mine came over a few hours ago, and one of the first things he said was, "Wow. Your voice has CHANGED." The thing is, I really don't pay much attention to that during casual conversation. I wouldn't say my voice is passable, yet, though. One thing that seems to have changed after a couple months of HRT is my prosody. It's like oestrogen does something in the part of the brain responsible for language causing me to speak with a new rhythm and intonation. Does anyone else have a similar story where your voice has sort of evolved of its own accord?

Being a very private person and no family, I am alone 'all' the time (with the exception of a gf who comes by about once a week) so I was interested in this post more than most others.  This is due to being almost at that voice improvement threshold point in my life.  I need to look up this EVA app.
Anyways, here is my thoughts as to the E role your mentioning.  I think an abundance of T causes one to be perpetually in an agitated state (the whole reason T exists and so on).  Lower T, raise E and ones mental state at rest becomes calmer, allowing certain othter mental processes to flow more naturally.  This 'may' be why such little effort yielded noticeable results with your friend.  Not saying mental state can overcome the anatomical (well thats another conversation) but I do not see why it cannot help.

Oh and by the way, I really like it when someone's post is cause for me to reach for my dictionary (prosody).  8)    Dani

Prosody...learned a new word!

Hard for me to remember but I was aware that my laugh changed without me making a conscious effort.

*Yes*, I have experienced dramatic changes to my prosody since going F/T.

If I do force out my old voice, the rhythm and intonation is still very feminine. Same 'old voice' but *very* different expression ...

Thanks  :-*
Downloaded and starting, I too do not have extensive time alone to practice either, also did not know about the app, good place to start  ;) ...

And as Grace said; I too learnt a new word today

The trick is, to stop giving a damn if people might hear you. Then you can work on it whenever you want. Plus if people hear you sounding like an idiot doing voice exercises you will feel a lot less stupid practicing an actual voice in front of them when y ou come to that.

Apparently my prosody has changed unconsciously as I get called miss or ma'am even by patients I've been with for 15-30 minutes. My therapist says I sound like a woman with a husky, high tenor but I don't hear it myself. Other times it takes one word for someone to say "Oh sorry, sir" at which point I want to eat their liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti.

I was very very intrigued when read about those apps. To the point of excitement. But... they are compatible with Galaxy S3 phones only. Really? It is 2015, the S4 was the best Android phone of 2013, there are other phones on the market too...
Gosh, how disappointing :(

I do talk differently now. I never really made an effort to do so. I have tried FYFV but I don't get the opportunity to practice as much.

The apps will work on different phones, i have the s5 and i have the app. I am also in contact  with the therapist that developed the program, sending her feed back on how it is working for me which is great so far.

I have S4 and Google Play does not even offer the possibility to install it (just says the app is not compatible with device :( ).
Has anyone tried her 30 days crash course programme? It costs 127 bucks, which is a bit steep on the other hand, I really need some professional programme to tune in some minor issues which I am still having (or just doing things wrong, lol).

I'm sorry,  she did tell me that the reason it is sporatic on which ones it works on its because of the microphone.  She needs a specific quality.  I know one person that bought a s3 used for 75 so she could use the programs.  Might be an option?

Thank You! Ah, this explains then why app requires a specific model. I looked into prices for used S3 phones here... mostly aroun 70-90 EUR.... might just as well buy the full programme for PC by K.Perez for 127 USD, which does sound as an option too.

I wonder if the mic on the iPone 5s is good enough for it. I'm thinking of getting both of the apps and having a go.
