Please dont misunderstood the word mistake.
On first I thought I should put it into quotes giving it a metaphor meaning but I realized that it is a mistake literally.
Before I start I would like to apologize if a similar thread was posted elsewhere, I did a search and found nothing. If there is one, I leave it on mods hands to decide.
So, what I mean by mistake? I mean the fact that the "I" does not congruous with the physical appearence.
I can think of 3 possible explanations:
1) Biological
2) Mental
3) Consciousness (or name it soul if you feel it matches better)
Personally, the third one seems to me (or I want to believe) more applicable, at least in my situtation.
What do you think about this?

Gender identity is wired into the brain. If it were social, why would DES babies (many who had no idea until much later) be more likely to be transgender? Also, if it were social, have to think that the professional community would have much better luck "curing" us.

In my case my mom's doctor at 1 month of pregnancy did something very illegal, gave her a large dose of male hormones to induce/simulate bad pregnancy. Instead of loosing me she almost died. To survive, she had to take a months worth of large female hormone doses.
Ps: some medical details left out on purpose for privacy.
So here reason purely medical.

Its biological, I mean if it weren't then transition wouldn't work. There is still tons of research that needs to be done but its clear to see that this isn't something that's just mental. It's inherent in us, a core that can't be changed no matter what.

It's all three. They are all related and inseparable. Of course biology drives our physical bodies and that affects our emotional state and "consciousness". Hormones don't only have physical effects, but mental and emotional ones as well. I'm not a doctor, but I think being trans* has a great deal to do with hormonal variations from the "normal" cis-male or female, that is why when transwomen (or men) undergo transition there are not only physical effects but so often they say that they feel better or more "right". Of course our experiences in life are important in determining how we react to the biological, but in the end most of us end up here, or a similar place.

It's not a mistake. It's human diversity.
I do think it's medical.
I have no idea what my mom did when she was pregnant but I really don't care what caused me to be a transsexual. All I know is that I am one and I move on with my life.

I like your attitude, IK. It's the same with me. I don't know for sure if it was DES, XXY, THC, something in the water or demonic possession, and it doesn't matter. How I got this way is moot. It's not like there's a "cure" other than what I'm doing now to pick up the pieces and finally live a happy life. As a bonus, I just love the way I look in my snake print maxi skirt.

OF COURSE it doesnt matter as far you have found hapiness.
I respect everyone's opinion no matter what it is. But even Im not a doctor, I have an argue here.
With an exception of cases, such as Myarkstir's, where they know exactly what happened, the bad feelings one experiences because his/her "I" looks at the body and realizes they dont match, are the reasons or the results? Maybe the results because of the imprisoned woman/man (aka "I") inside the wrong body?
You may all be confused as I use sometimes to mess with my english as its not my first laguage. I just think of something more simple to give you my point.
Imagine the human race as we all know but with a single difference. No eyes. We dont have eyesight, we are blind. People with such diversities, just like the beautiful lady ImagineKate suggested, would feel, for example, dysphoria? The mismatch? Even the people like Myarkstir, where the body's chemistry is the cause?
My point of my point (lol) is that the "I" looks at the body, disagrees with what it sees, and as all we know, the brain "obeys" to the consciousness and the result is the exudations of some chemical fluids which determine our mood, or even make us feel the dysphoria.
But again, I totally understand when some of you say that you dont care for the "why", I wouldnt too if I were in your position. This is just a philosophical quest. I like it. Im greek :P
Btw, thank you all for your contribution :D

For me it is definitely number 3. In my soul I know that I am a woman.
Right now I am sitting before a mirror, dressed en femme. What I see is not important to me as I will never look look like the beautiful ladies on th Golden Globe awards last week. What I feel IS what is important. I feel what is in my soul, and in my soul I am indeed a woman.
Ciara.

All three are interrelated with different weighting factors that vary among every individual. Also throw in a zillion other random influences. It all starts during fetal development which is an absolutely amazing process. Thousands of things happening, thousands of building up, tearing down, rebuildings taking place. Plenty of opportunities for a Quark to come flying by and ruining your day. Or life.
