"(Reuters) - Thailand's constitution will include the term "third gender" for the first time, a member of a panel drafting a new charter said on Thursday, in a move to empower transgender and gay communities and ensure them fairer legal treatment.
Thailand has a large gay community, but remains largely conservative, although homosexual, transgender and transsexual people play key roles in its entertainment industry. "

Is this something that you would like to see here in the West? How do they do they handle the question of which bathroom or locker room to use in schools for example?

I think a third gender is a step back, like civil unions. If it is meant to include "other" genders (non-binary) that's fine, but if it is meant to segregate MtFs or FtMs, no thanks.
I was also surprised to learn (not here, I was researching this a few months ago) that Thailand actually doesn't have a lot of rights for transgender people even though it's a top destination for surgery for transsexuals.

Indeed, the current silence on this topic is deafening.

Earth shattering or not, is this something that you would like to see in this country, and why or why not?

I like it, Samsung let me register my phone using the choices male, female, other. I chose other. By default, a non-binary person has no option under a male/female system.

On another site, my gender field* says Cupcake. Facebook doesn't have that!
*Go ahead and flame me because you don't think Cupcake is a gender, folks.
