Police ID victim of early morning Norfolk shooting

A Norfolk man was killed and another man injured early Saturday morning in separate shootings that occurred about two blocks apart.

Detectives are trying to determine whether the death of Floyd Beard, 30, near the Five Points Community Farm Market was related to the second shooting, which occurred about 2 1/2 hours later.

Transgender prostitutes are known to frequent the stretch of commercial and industrial buildings where Beard was killed, according to eight people who live or work in the area. They said it is common to see a half-dozen men dressed as women near the intersection of E. 25th and Fawn streets.

Murder upsetting made even moreso by the fact that this article shamelessly misgenders the victim. Other non-news sources give her name as Lamia Beard.

Strange how we, as a community, feel the need to throw phrases like "shameless misgendering" around, as if this validates the tragedy that has occurred. If you knew the victim personally, then perhaps you could enlighten us. Otherwise making accusations of that kind serves no one.

I don't quite get it, do you mean if the victim lived their main life as a male and would have preferred to be referenced as such?

Either way, the media is pretty shameless any way you look at it... whether gender related or not.

I'm sorry, if those are her breasts and not prosthetics, I highly DOUBT she lived primarily as a male.

Note: ImagineKate and I posted at the same time. But it doesn't change anything in my post regarding Cathy's statement on the first article.  However, it does clearly show the first article did indeed misgender her.

I have included my post on Cathy's statement in a quote box below for anyone who wishes to read it, remember this was made before ImagineKate posted her article that contained all the information missing from the first one.

At no point does the article state the person was transgender.

The only statement that even suggests it is possible is by the paper and that is simply that Transgender prostitutes frequent the area, and that Beard once was convicted of prostitution and soliciting a prostitute.

Everything else including preferred gender is an assumption, a good assumption maybe but still not backed up by any facts in evidence.

Cathy was banned for 7 days, because she repeatedly reposted material that had been edited or removed by staff. If she had instead complained directly to me or Cindy as outlined in the TOS, she would not be banned at this time.

Read the story this morning. Media did it again.

This article genders her correctly and states about others mis gendering.

Anyway it is sad anytime soneone is murdered and respect should be given.

I should apologize for my role in the misunderstand here. The network I was on was blocking all the sites that give Lamia Beard's female name and talked about the misgendering. I was reading them via google cache, so I couldn't include links in my second post. So I posted the original article and then a second post about my personal reaction to the misgendering. I probably should have waited until now before I could provide better links (thanks ImagineKate for including one with your post), but the original article left out her female name and that she was a trans woman, so I felt I had to say something so people would know why this was relevant.

I'm really sorry to everyone reading it that it sounded like an unsubstantiated accusation.

Misgendering is bad without a doubt. Regarding the media, I work for a TV news station and most reporters I talk to don't really have any idea about trans issues so they just report information as given. It is usually sourced from official sources such as police reports which will list the person's legal name and gender. Many of them will respond to polite requests to correct information.

This is the unfortunate reality of news in that the "safe" way to stay factual is to report from official sources. Unofficial sources are notated as such.

In most cases no malice is meant.
