Title: Snow storm in U.S. north east (New England, NJ/NY/PA)

Riding out the storm here. we have a roaring wood fire going in the wood stove and wood to last a few days inside the house. Prepped the generator and snow blower for duty.
Christie and Cuomo have declared states of emergency here and NYC is shutdown after 11pm.
Most importantly I am home and not on the roads.
School is closed tomorrow so the kiddies get a snow day.
Batten down the hatches!

I'm ready for it. Plenty of food, a gas stove I can use if no electric, plenty of water, charged power bricks to keep phone/table/laptop running a while, and two warm kitties that like to sleep on my lap. Just missing my wife since she is in TN taking care of her mom. I'll be joining her in TN at the end of the week.

I see Starbucks was going to be closed.
What horrors.
Anyway everyone in its path (my parents included) please heed the warnings and stay indoors warm and safe.

I'm out in western mass and thankfully I have 2 wood stoves in my house so on the off chance that I lose power at least I won't be cold. I had to look at my poor sports cars today parked in the garage looking sad and lonely, but hey maybe spring will get here quicker :)

Safe travels!
Our stove is gas. As a backup we have the gas grill with side burner.
Kitties are here, but making mischief as always and occupying space in front of the wood stove, lol.

And I decided to fire up the grill and put some chicken on. Because I can and because weather doesn't stop me!

I just had baked chicken and green beans. The snow has begun. Taken around 8:30, the Weather Geese don't seem too concerned. We'll see how that works out!

Just came back in with poochie, the wind is howling. Weather says we had a gust of 46 mph. There's about 4" and drifts around 8 to 10" so far. I'll update you in the morning. :)

It's still snowing up here in Massachusetts this morning. It's pretty eery to look out on the street and not to see any cars at all. It's still very quiet out here. No one has gone out to remove any snow yet and honestly I am not looking forward to it. It's crazy windy over here too. It doesn't look like we are getting tons of snow but there is definitely a lot on the ground, that's for sure.

Dud of a storm here in NJ. I'm 10 min from Manhattan I we got about 5 inches maybe. Glad there wasn't much to shovel, and it was the light fluffy kind of snow, so the electric snow blower did very well.

Devlyn,
those photos look a lot like how my house looked following Snowmageddon back in 2011. Crazy.
Even more crazy was that my mother insisted that I go outside and shovel snow while that blizzard was still coming down. "If you keep shoveling, you can stay ahead of it." ::) Riiiight...
Granted, I still had to go out in it just to pick up the pieces of aluminum siding that the storm was ripping off my neighbor's house. She at least had the good fortune to be out of town at the time.
Anyway, stay warm.
Also, I like the geese.

During Nor'easters the geese stay exposed because of the wind and drifting. If it just snows, they get buried!

Well, if it makes anyone feel better, here in Chicago, we had a blizzard yesterday. Got a good foot and a half of snow with 40mph winds. Apparently it made the record books.
Also, during the storm, someone left the gate open, and our dog decided that that would be the perfect time to go wander the neighborhood. Brilliant. She didn't get too far, as I'm not sure she could even make it over some of the snow piles. Actually, aside from checking on one of my neighbors, that was the only time I went outside yesterday. I mostly hid inside where it was warm and watched youtube videos.

Good grief a double whammy is coming in the next couple of days. The street I live on is only a fraction of its normal width right now and the snow banks are at least 4-5 feet tall. This is getting ridiculous now. The only good side is that the huskies are happy.

I hear the mayor is telling people not to jump out of windows and into the snow?
Then I saw this:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2015/02/17/mayor-urges-knucklehead-bostonians-not-to-jump-out-of-windows-and-into-the-snow/
Wow! Are people really that dumb?
Well, first and foremost, you're a libertarian, so I know that you're just as outraged as I am that the mayor is dictating personal behaviour. Secondly, if you don't have substantive proof that's me jumping out of windows, don't expect me to incriminate myself. I've been around the block once or twice, I'm not falling for that ruse!

During the blizzard of '78 I was living in Manhattan. Some friends and I walked down to the Wall Street area. Near Delmonico's there was a narrow street where the snow formed a perfect parabola between the windows on the second floor of a building and the windows of the second floor of the building across the street. At the lowest point, in the middle of the road the snow was 2 feet deep or more.

Actually this one was a baseboard which malfunctioned due to a defective zone valve. So I'm replacing both.

The Alberta Clipper came by my area and left. 3 days of snow, but only 8" out of the expected 13" fell with half melting on the pavement. I watched a lot of YouTube videos this weekend and the same Roto-Rooter commercials about freezing pipes came up. For those in the East, a severe plumbers warning is in effect!

Gah I hate plumbing! I ran out of nitrile gloves so I used vinyl I usually use for food prep (I dont like my hands smelling like garlic or meat for days). BIG mistake! Now my hands are all dirty with solder flux, copper oxide and other assorted crud, below my nails too, ugh!
Anyway it's fixed. Just had to let the bread dissolve.
This morning it was minus double digits in most parts of the county. I saw -8.5 before I left the house at 6:30. Kiddies still have school though, but a few are closed.

More heating system woes. One zone was stuck open. New zone valve needed. I shut off that zone at the boiler for now.
Schools are on 2 hour delay today. Just dropped ours off. The principal was her usual self lecturing the students. School buses have tons of problems around here and one of my friends is pissed because her son's bus didn't come after she waited more than an hour.

Would you believe I moved to New York to get away from snow? Where I grew up we would get a foot or more per week when I was growing up. It reached 40° below and in the summer 120°. (The 120° was fahrenheit)
Time to move again.

Yes, I do need to move. I hear Texas is nice. Probably DFW or Austin. Austin has a whole queer scene going on. I would fit right in?

It's bad enough my water keeps freezing despite my best effort to keep it from doing so, but it's even worse to have the pipes to my water heater frozen while the cold water runs fine. It's like the weather is taunting me when all winter I've just been wanting a hot shower.
That said, I'm going to miss winter when it finally passes. It's truly my favorite season despite all of the crap that comes along with it.
