Susan's Place Transgender Resources

This survey has been approved and has full ethics approval from a recognised science facility. Your participation is entirely voluntary.

Perceived body image is very closely related to mental health, and in cis gender individuals, very closely linked to eating behaviours. This leads to an important question of whether individuals who do not identify as cis gender (trans*, genderfluid etc) experience the same. If so, there may be an argument for incorporating wider support (eg with eating behaviour) into care plans.   

The following survey explores this question. Individuals aged 18-30 are respectfully requested to give their opinions. Please read the Information Page at the start and the consent form.

Your date of birth is asked for, but only so you can identify your data, should you wish for it to be withdrawn at a later date. Therefore, this does not have to be your real date of birth. However, please do put your real age so we can explore how any feelings differ across age groups.

If you are outside of this age range and would still like to respond, please do. However, your opinions will not be included in the first report, which will focus on the 18-30 range.

I tried running it. The first page asked the question " Indicate your biological gender." It gave only Male or Female as choices.

I decided not to complete the survey. I have problems with this question. What do they mean by "biological gender"? If they mean physical body sex, how should an intersex person (or someone who has changed their body so they are now partially female) pick one of the two binary sexes? If they mean gender identity, how shold a non-binary person answer this?

Fatal flaw!

Well the person posting the survey has apologised profusely for any offence that my have been caused. She meant natal or birth gender and she had not realised the issues of IS or non-binary may have. It was a good opportunity to educate her on gender and gender affirmation.

I explained that as a transgender female I would put my birth gender as female even though I was MAAB. I explained that my being assigned male at birth was an error based on external genitalia and had nothing to do with how I gender identified as soon as I was able, as all children do.

do we at least get some dessert for taking two survey's in two days

Yes it is and I was surprised. This is a group that has been working with cispeople on body image and decided, rightly, that it was an important topic for trans*. But had not understood the sensitivities involved.

They now do and that will disseminate throughout their ethics department also.

I think in some ways we can look upon this as a victory.
