Title: Normal for nipple to bleed when starting to be active 1 month post op?
Post by: Axx17 on February 17, 2015, 06:10:03 PM
I'm 1 month post op and my surgeon told me it's alright to start jogging again. Since my OCD gets the best of me, I was checking on my chest every couple of minutes. The next time I checked I saw that one of my nipples was bleeding. Is that normal? I tend to worry over small things, so I just wanted to ask so I don't freak out over nothing.

To be honest I think it's normal. I haven't had experience with it but I know some joggers have had irritation from the clothing rubbing on nipples. So with your recent surgery I am guessing this is the issue.  Would suggest some sort of cover while running or wearing tighter fitting ->-bleeped-<- as to lose the friction. If it continues bleeding call your Doc.

Good luck!

Depends on the surgeon, I guess.  Garramone said no cardio for 6 weeks.

Personally, if my nipple was bleeding I wouldn't do anything for a while.

I'm trying to remember how long mine were raw and bleeding. I think it was until the one month mark when I stopped using the xeroform.

I would suggest no cardio or anything that can cause your shirt to rub too much. Remember, that skin is very sensitive and get went through some trauma. If you are really concerned and it's more than a spot or two I would call the doctors office.

Part of the speed at which you heal has to do with the amount of tissue and method of removal. I don't recall any bleeding post surgically, but I was small and had drains in that were in for a week.

Anytime you remove a fair amount of tissue, some "dead space" is left behind. In other words, a cavity that once had tissue and now does not. If the tissue is not tacked down with internal sutures, fluid can build up in the dead space which can be anything from a seroma, which is pinkish to light yellow fluid, or blood if there is a small bleeder. Activity too soon makes fluid buildup more likely to happen.

keep an eye on it and check with your Dr. if it continues. Any odor associated with the bleeding or increase in soreness can be a sign of infection and should be checked out immediately.
