Title: Doing your injection the first week of recovery?
Post by: Daft on March 04, 2015, 12:07:54 PM
My top surgery is scheduled in a few weeks time, and while I'm kind of aware of how limited your mobility is during the first week or two during recovery, I was wondering how anyone was able to manage to do their shot during. Did you skip? Did you have someone else do it for you? Was it not a problem to do?

Luckily my surgery is scheduled on a Monday and I do my shots on Saturdays, so I'm hoping by the weekend I won't be as disabled and will be able to do my injection, though I have someone who can help me if that's necessary, though I'd prefer doing it by myself.

I had my surgery on Monday, and my regular shot day was Tuesday, no problem at all.

People can wipe their butt just fine, I think you can poke yourself in the thigh.

true but I've heard people even mention going to the bathroom and cleaning up afterward was difficult so idk, I'm going based on what people have said and things I've come across but it sounds like you're basically extremely limited in the first week, who knows if that's due to a person's pain tolerance or the kind of surgery they had but I suppose I'll be fine, it'll be whatever it'll be

Daft, I've heard a very wide range of experiences, too. From all is fine and they didn't even need a pain med, to they can't reach to wipe the butt and can't move arms over head enough to pull on a tshirt for 10 days.
I think your question is great, and relevant to me, too since I have top surgery coming up and am on a weekly T schedule.

I just don't know what to expect at all.

Daft, you will be fine and have no problem with this.  Don't give it a second thought!   :)

Question is, are you allowed to do the shot so soon after surgery?
For my top and hysterectomy surgeries I had to be off T before and about 10 days after surgery. They don't have solid proof, but there are indications that being on hormones makes you more prone to infections and makes healing slower. So my surgeons played the safe card and told me not to use anything one week before surgery until a week to 10 days after surgery.

I'm having surgery with Dr. Medalie on the 16th (YAY!!!) and he advised me not to do my shot for the week prior to surgery, but that I could do my next shot as soon after surgery as I wanted. He didn't mention any wait time or complications from injecting. Good luck, Daft and Mac!!  ;D

I have been told not to administer my T for about a week post-op. I'm on gel though, and it gets rubbed on the shoulders so she could have been taking mobility into account.

Well it very much depends on the surgeon. In my case, it was left completely up the PHP who had no problem with it. But some surgeons consider it "risky" for whatever reason.

Congrats and thanks!!

Hmm, I had my pre-op consultation call with a nurse today and she said it was fine if I do my injection on the Saturday prior to my surgery (Monday), but depending on how I feel, it might be best for me to postpone my injection until I feel mobile enough. Subjective depending on the doctor I guess.

If it's just "mobility", imo in the first week you will most likely be mobile enough. Heck I took a mile walk the first week. But probably not the first couple days. Blah first couple days I couldn't be bothered with gel.
