Title: Australia: Recieving mail in a name other than my legal one?
Post by: Emrys on March 09, 2015, 05:04:15 AM
Though it is too tough for me to change my name at this point, I understandably am trying to push my legal name as far away as possible. There are lots of hooks and such I'm having to get through to eliminate hearing that name though.

Part of it is when I recieve mail, I use my preferred name, which does not match my legal name at all as I'm changing my last name as well. But of course I do not have ID for that name.

Assuming I get someone picky at the post office that wants ID, what are my options?
  • Do I need to use my legal name? (Currently I'm not if it's assumed it will fit into my letterbox)
  • Will they accept it if I say it's my preferred name as "we" have the same address?
  • Is there some sort of ID I can get for this purpose?

Does anyone have any experience with this?

As long as you don't order things through the mail that requires ID to receive, you should be OK. My dog used to get mail, even a credit card once.

Sydney sider here

My mobile phone is in another name (I have no idea how it happened). When it was posted to me I received the "please come in and pick this up". My surname and address matched and the staff gave me my parcel

@LordKAT
I don't buy anything that particularly requires security, but I sometimes get packages from online or people on ->-bleeped-<- that don't fit in the postbox and need to be claimed. :c

@immortal gypsy
I see. But the last name won't match, just the address.
I considered using a c/o for my other name, or even my partnere or something but personally I feel I shouldn't need to.
I like seeing my name, my real name, Emrys, by it's lonesome on my package. That's all. :c
