Title: Using a Photobucket pic for your Avatar
Post by: CB on March 19, 2015, 08:09:01 PM
I've been trying to link a photobucket picture for my avatar.
I've tried several permuations including the bottom image option as described by Devlyn here:
https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/topic,183815.0.html

No success! I either get the blank error image or it switches me to "no avatar" option in profile after I save it.
What am I doing wrong???

Just upload it from your computer is the easiest.

Avatars are a upload file.

Rest of the forums needs a photo share service.

Avatar pictures are the one thing you can upload without an image host. Just select the picture you want directly from the profile.

Edit: Izzy beat me to it!

You have to choose specify image by url and then only put in the direct url of the image, no image tags or anything else. But as the others have said, its easier to just upload it from your computer and the site makes a small version of it. If you don't have a copy on your pc, you can save it there from pb first. I'm not sure if there is a size limitation as I've never tried to put a big one up myself.

Sure but I should be able to link it to an upload host like photobucket. Personally I'm much more comfortable using an external host because I have ultimate control over that image if for some reason the site won't let me remove it.

Maybe it simply doesn't work?

I don't think it works. I just tried it with photobucket myself and tried several different pics.

The avatar is different and has to be uploaded.

It is only a uploaded there is not outside connection and the system does not place anything in your computer to make it happen.

It works the same way your photo bucket works, take the file from your computer and stores the image on the web.

You are the one who controls you profile so as long as it is with in tos you can add or remove as you wish.

Photobucket can be a bit complicated when it comes to using direct links and the avatar is one of those situations. You need to make sure there are no html link in the image url (these often seem to be included in Photobucket links). It should be just straight up http://imageurl.com/image.jpg (or whatever) and include no <a=href> tags.
