Title: FFS w/ Dr. Spiegel in 10 days
Post by: Tori_Chi on March 21, 2015, 02:35:15 PM

Well, I'm 10 days away! Going to have a nose job and forehead. I'm really excited but also pretty scared. I chose him because I really like the foreheads I've seen other girls get, and I am hoping that my nose just needs a little refinement rather than a whole new shape. I saw the video with gigi gorgeous and him, and although I don't really look like her, I think the amount and style of work that she had done with him is what I want too.
I'll let you all know how it goes! I followed Eva's thread and it sound like recovery can be really rough, so I'm hoping its not that bad for me!

Well, you are very attractive now. If he makes you any lovelier, you'll blow the sun off its axis. But of course, it is hard to see what you really look like in these little pictures and I really can't see your nose profile. I'm happy for you. You shall be stunning.

Prepare for the worst and hope for the best ;) He is very good at what your having done, I love my results ;D

Congratulations...I have a thread in the forum showing my results 1.5 years later - with Dr. Spiegel. Maybe they will be useful to you. You're in good hands. Boston Medical is a charming hospital, as well. Recovery wasn't a big deal for me. The insane swelling lasts a few days and is pretty freaky and the scar can be hard to look at, but honestly those things pale in comparison to having "fixed" this unfixable issue.

Thanks everyone! I did it on tuesday, and the next two days were pretty hard, but I am feeling a little better today. Can't see much cause of the bandages and swelling, but I'll post some updates when I'm a little bit more in full form, in the meantime, I really appreciate the well-wishing xo

Hang in there, it WILL get better faster than you think ;) I know I went through some surprising post op blahs, its not uncommon to have a little depression after such an invasive surgery.... You will feel better when you get home if you haven't left already ;) The hardest thing for me was not getting enough sleep due to all the pain and discomfort :( I was also worried Id end up looking weird and even regretting it but that was all wrong and nearly 6 weeks into recovery I LOVE the results Im seeing as things heal ;D In a few weeks the worst will definitely be behind you and what you see now is not really how it will end up... I bet Dr S did another awesome job on you and your gonna look great and love it 8)

That photo is kind of tongue and cheek. I felt so hurt and scared I wanted to take a selfie full of bravado. It's pretty hard to see yet what the results will be still. I haven't taken a straightforward photo because I'm a little too scared of staring at myself.

I couldn't look at myself for 3 days at least and then it was still hard to look until a few days after that. But you'll get used to it and it feels amazing when the bandages come off. Congratulations on a successful surgery and hope you have a super speedy recovery!!!

I thought after 1 month I would be settled with how I was going to turn out. 5 months later, I am more than pleased with the results that Dr. Spiegel offered me. I would say that the timeline month to month for healing, that Dr. Spiegel offered me were spot on. Even today, I still have residual swelling, but I couldn't be happier.
At this point, you are months away from your final results. Sit back and enjoy the changes.

Stacy--you look amazing! I'm so happy to hear that, and I think I will be pleased in the end. It's just scary. This morning I thought about my old face when I woke up and started to cry, thinking I made a horrible mistake--before surgery, I had that weird thing where I didn't pass but people still said I was pretty. Now, I felt like maybe I would pass, but I would now no longer feel pretty and that made me sad. So, to feel better I put on makeup, and tried to cover the bruises and contour to kind of balance the swelling, and I got an idea of what it might be like soon and I felt happy.

It's been about 10 days since surgery I guess. Here's what I looked like april 1st: http://imgur.com/zSiCdW8
So when I look at these two pictures, I can see that even though this has felt like the longest, most painful ten days of my life, I'm healing pretty quickly. Seriously though, people, this is a really painful surgery, and I just did forehead and nose, which is supposed to be less painful than jaw. I might have a low pain tolerance, but even still, I was not ready for it.

2 weeks post-op, no makeup, still bruised. But happy!
I went shopping without makeup or styling my hair at all, and got ma'am the whole time. The changes aren't huge, but after only two weeks the are significant enough that I feel like there are whole new possibilities for me, and my confidence is really good.

My nose and eyelids are still swollen, and my forehead is numb (and will be for a while)--but I feel already like I can begin to put the experience behind me and move forward in my life. Therefore, I'll just kind of write some closing thoughts, because I think it will be a while before there are whole new changes.
I think Spiegel is a very good surgeon for the things I wanted for my face and my priorities--which was to do as little as possible while still working to pass. He didn't try to sell me on jaw at all, he said mine was fine as it was if I didn't want it. When he recommended a lip lift and I said I didn't want that, he didn't press at all.
In person, he is funny, and his bedside manner is good--but you don't get a ton of time with him. I dealt with his surgical fellows as much or more than with him. They were also very good. My only complaint is that the surgical fellows gave me 10 fewer painkillers than they thought they did, and when I was still in pain, and called for more, they told me to wait--so I was really stretching out the ones I had, and had moments of real pain. Due to pain, the recovery ended up more stressful and hard than I think it needed to be, especially for my mom, who was watching me in pain and really upset about it. When she called to ask if she could come get the 10 pills they didn't give me, the surgical fellow said, "some people with drug addictions do this surgery on just ibprofen." This may be true, but I have to say I found this kind comment of insulting. I am not a drug addict, and therefore, don't agree that I should have had to take precautions and endure pain that a drug addict would endured. Some women also give birth on dirt floors in certain parts of the world, but when paying thousands of dollars for a doctor, I think most women would be upset were they asked to do so.
Ultimately though, when I'm not longer in pain, and pleased with the results, it def doesn't seem like a sufficient reason to chose a different surgeon. For the surgery I had, forehead and nose, I would recommend Spiegel and his staff, if you want to have surgery in the United States. I think the procedures I had will be worth the money for me, and that it will help me move past this kind of stage of my transition, which is pretty priceless. Good luck to all you other girls considering it!

That's really awesome! For such a short time you really look awesome!
As for the pain killers that sucks, I have know two people that had problems with pain killer addictions after a medical procedure. I kind of get why the doctor's people worry but that much pain really sucks :-\
When you did your consultation, did you skype with him or do a face-to-face? And also would you mind me asking about the the price for the trip, hospital and surgery all together? You can also totally just ignore me if you don't want to. Sorry, I ask too many questions sometimes :P

No, I am happy to share. I feel like the more knowledge we have together, the better outcomes we can get and the better decisions with our bodies we can make. It was about 9,000 for the nose job, and 9,000 for forehead package + 2500 or so for hospital fees and anesthesia. So total was around 21,500. I've heard of people getting better prices with him when they get more stuff, but I wanted less so i think I didn't get the best prices. That said, when I tried to negotiate, they weren't really having it. They sent me an estimate and were pretty firm on it.
As for consultation. I did to Skype sessions and then had a long session with him in-person the day before. He didn't take any x-rays or anything though. It was more like, "we decide what to do when we see what is there." I brought in pictures of noses that I wanted mine to be like--cause there seems to be leeway to shape the nose, but the forehead is more just standard, was my impression.

Hey, so it's been a month, and the pain is mostly just a memory. I'm pretty happy with the results. Here are two pictures from my instagram (hence the filters)--but even still you can get a sense for how my forehead is flatter than before and I don't have a heavy brow anymore.

A bunch of people have said that they didn't even realize I'd had surgery (which for me is a good thing--I wanted it subtle), but the changes are enough that I'm pretty much passing whenever I want to.
My nose is still swollen and I have gross boogers, but I think that is to be expected and that it takes up to 6 months or more to see the final result. If anyone who is interested in surgery from Spiegel wants to follow me on instagram to see how my face changes over the next few months, my handle is @dtorreyp
Thanks to everyone on here who encouraged me through this process.

So how does it feel like day 1 -2 ish. Is it unbearable pain, or would you say more annoying than anything? also does Spiegel accept insurance? I heard somewhere here that was the case. The stuff I want done are my nose, forehead, and chin. He said it would be about 28k and I have NO IDEA how to get that much money.

It hurts pretty bad, to be honest. Like 6-7 out of 10. I don't know if he would take insurance, but more than anything else, I've never heard of Insurance companies paying for FFS. Most insurance doesn't cover "cosmetic" work, and they claim FFS is cosmetic. I talked to some people about it, and gave up pretty quickly.

Everyone told me the same thing, but I have always had a heavy jaw, I would get filler in my cheeks regularly to balance the heaviness. I picked Dr. Spiegel because I found his work to be the most natural and I wanted a slight change not a whole new look. I am 3 months post op on May 12th.

Well congratulations! I am so excited for your successful FFS procedure! I hope you are feeling better and better each day!
I only ask because I read a thread here a while ago about how someone managed to get insurance to cover it. Hopefully I find an answer or alternative to pay for it!

Yeah, I didn't mean to be discouraging. I live in WA and we have trans inclusive health care, but even still, they basically only pay for hormones and counseling right now. There is work being done to get them to cover GRS, and that might happen in the next year or two, but breasts/face are considered cosmetic. I talked to a bunch of people in the Gender Justice League and a few other places about it, and the chances of them covering it, much less covering it with an out of state doctor of my choice, looked to be very low and involved a protracted fight (like years of appeals) to even get them to consider it. That said, there was just a big meeting here in WA, and NY is changing their rules, so there is hope! Just probably not in the near future.

My surgery with Spiegel (five procedures) was booked for three weeks away. I live close by so I took the subway in and gave Katie a check for $40,095, the full amount of the surgery, and the next day a friend of mine brought to my attention that I might be able to get it covered by insurance. I called Katie up and asked her to look into it, and within a week insurance had approved, she'd voided my check for $40k, and I wrote her a new check for $3500. Just like that... $36.5k saved thanks to a friend's word of advice. Can you imagine how happy I was??
If anyone is curious, I purchase insurance privately directly from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. Here is their policy: https://www.bluecrossma.com/common/en_US/medical_policies/189%20Transgender%20Services%20prn.pdf

I'm one week post op today with Spiegel. I can confirm he does accept insurance, but I too am in state, so I'm thinking it's a Massachusetts thing. I have Harvard Pilgrim healthcare. I had my forehead, nose, jaw, chin, trachea done, because that's what my insurance covered and there was room for slight improvements with all of them. My brow was the biggest dysphoria inducer for me, and I'm happy to report that I'm now sporting a flat as a pancake forehead. That being said, the pain is intense, and the swelling and discomfort are no joke. My chin and jaw are still huge. I don't know how I'm going to go back to work in ten days. I saw the Dr. today and he said everything looks great, so I guess that's good. Ugh,this jaw swelling though, it's killing me!!

I'm honestly thinking of moving to Boston and getting Blue Cross and BlueShield insurance to get FFS with Spiegel if it as good as you say it is. I'm making plans to perhaps reside in the area for a year. I honestly cannot think of any other surgeon I would like to perform my surgery and it would definitely save on expenses. Are there any other insurance companies that cover the cost of FFS? There's definitely none in NC (they only cover GRS) and I am currently trying to move from NC anyway.

Hey, FYI for everyone, I just tried to setup a consultation with Dr. Spiegel at Boston Medical and they told me that Dr. Spiegel is not accepting new patients. I called his office and they confirmed that in order to be covered by insurance for the procedures I do need to go through Boston Medical. They mentioned something about Boston Medical not signing the acceptance form for new patients or something, he wasn't really clear on why but he confirmed that there is nothing that can be done about it.. Apparently this could change over time.. I have the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts ppo plan and so this is really depressing news for me because I was excited about being able to get these procedures covered by my insurance, and its the only way I could possibly afford it. :'(
