Title: Pet Peeves!
Post by: Matthew on April 20, 2015, 12:25:35 PM
Let's see if I can get a war started here ;)

What are your top 3 pet peeves?

Mine?

1. Damaged books. This is by far my worst, there have been times before when I've creased the spine and been so distressed I've ended up buying another book! If someone creases the spine or folds a corner of a page on one of my books, hell hath no fury ...

2. Someone eating or chewing either loudly or with their mouths open. Unbearable! (Eeeek!)

3. People who have their music way too loud on public transport. There's a lot of things i could say about this, but I better not  :P

Food related issues...

1. People who leave food in the fridge ,when I open the drawer of the crisper to find it gone off.

2. Finding empty milk,or less than 1/4 cup of milk left in the container.( I usually just finish it off).

3. Coming into the kitchen and finding the margarine and spread container open on the bench with remainders of foodscraps..(person previous made toast and left banana skin or tomato ends on bench)

I mean...come on..how hard is it to clean up after yourself? Open it,put it back,if you notice it's nearly gone next time you're out buy some more, and if you notice food on its way out in the fridge put it in the bin...even to go one step further ..the bin outside so it doesn't leak through the bin liner inside.

Infuriating!

Because of how very little I socialize, most of mine revolve around shopping, I would mention inconsiderate driving, but that seems to be so common, it is not worth mentioning anymore.

1.  People who have their cart in the middle of the isle, they know and see you need by but just take their time.  I've now abbreviated my own courtesy to:  "I need by please" from the "excuse me", just a tad more blunt.

2.  People who cannot seem to take enough time to put their cart away, but rather just leave it beside their car and drive away.

3.  This one is me, I am so tired of not finding something when I need it.  I put things down where I'm using it.

I did have an experience the other day that renewed my faith in people.  The person paying did not have enough $ and was about to have the cashier pull an item, when the lady in front of me said "Let her have it, I'll pay", too cool.

1) The incorrect use of words - any of them.  This is actually why being called a woman makes me cringe - that is an incorrect term for me.  The only word that I knowingly misuse is "literally," and that is an unfortunate holdover from when I learned it at age 9. When I discovered that I'd written "entwined" rather than "intertwined" in a story, I wanted to bury my head in the sand and cry.  :P

2) People who take up a lot of space unnecessarily, like guys who sit spread-eagle on buses or in planes.

3) Dirty bathrooms, especially if caps are off of things!!!  My apartment is... not the best but my bathroom is always clean.  I shared a bathroom with my sister growing up, and it was horrible.

I agree with the two I quoted, I'm fanatical about Babylon 5, I once lent a friend a Babylon 5 book and found it open and yellowing on his windowsill!! Now the book always opens in the same place to show me the yellow pages.
The same person also used an unread, mint condition B5 monthly magazine as a coaster and left a coffee ring mark on the cover.....I went ballistic!

My no 2 peeve is when people who don't have eczema tell me to stop scratching, I generally tell them to cover themselves in itching powder and if they can ignore the itching then they can tell me to stop scratching.

I lent a school friend a copy of Splinter on the Mind's Eye (the first ever Star Wars spin off book!)... it was in great condition when I lent it, not very great when I got it back. I was furious at hem and he couldn't see what the big deal was. That was 35 years ago and I still remember how upset I was!!!

Ironically, I lent a friend my The Young Ones DVDs. He returned them a few months later, quite apologetic that the cover had been damaged by some green goo (caused by rotting lettuce from a bag he had placed on the DVDs when the lettuce wasn't rotting...!). I was rather amused, because if any DVD was going to get rotting green goo on it, it would be The Young Ones.

Not necessarily in this order:

1. People who can't or won't control their kids in public. I have all the sympathy in the world for the woman in the grocery store with a couple of tired, squally little ones -- in fact I'll often say something to try to make it better, or offer to carry something -- but it drives me bonkers to be in a nice restaurant next to yuppie parents who think it's just adorable when their kids act out, and who wouldn't dream of putting a stop to their precious self-expression, even when it involves running around the place annoying other diners.

2. Littering. No, the world isn't your family room -- pick up after yourself, dammit!

3. This is sort of a quirky one... people who won't respect wild animals by giving them enough space. Too many people think that the natural world is just another Disneyland, put there for the entertainment of humans. If you're lucky enough to see animals in the wild... leave them alone, watch them from a distance, don't make them nervous -- that goes for any animal, from birds to bears. They were there first.

Totally agree. What pisses me off in a new level is that in my country, there is a law that says women can breastfeed in public. There actually were a protest about it and they feed their children in front of a government building. Absolutely ridiculous.
I do understand that when a baby have to eat, it have to eat. But PUT A  DAWN COVER OVER IT DAMMIT! Many just vulgarly put their breasts out for everyone to see. I feel offended specially because I'm bisexual. I honestly feel kind of sexually harassed. Showing the breasts to someone who doesn't want to see them is sexual harassment. Having to feed is no excuse to show breasts in public.

^breastfeeding is one of the least sexual things anyone can do with their body.  The media needs to stop sexualizing feminine bodies.  If someone without breasts can take their shirt off in public, so can someone with breasts - it's the same bloody body part!

If it makes you uncomfortable because you get aroused by seeing that, that's not a big deal.  But no one should police another person's body simply because that person has a body type that they *may* be attracted to.  It's up to the person with the attraction to control themselves.

Hard to choose just three, I have so many. :D These are not necessarily in order, though.

- Public transport mishaps
A small collection of annoying things other people do, mainly on the bus. First of all, how hard it is to take out the money or bus card in advance, before you step in? Starting to rummage through your bag/purse/pockets when you've gotten on the bus takes unnecessarily lot of time and if the weather is bad, makes other people stand out in cold/rain/whatever for no other reason than you being too lazy.
(The front seats in the buses here are usually reserved for handicaps, elderly people, parents with small children etc.) If you're young and healthy, walk to the back end of the bus. You don't need a front seat meant for someone who can't make it to the back, considering there are usually steps to get there. Again, you're being lazy and inconsiderate.
Getting more drunk than a duck and using public transport. Especially if you're being extremely obnoxious and loud when drunk. It's NOT okay to jokingly threaten to kill everyone on the bus. Walk home, maybe you'll sober up a bit and realize how stupid you are.

- Constantly pointing out the thing you can't/don't know how to do
Yes, I messed up. No, I don't know how to do it. I got it on the first time you said it, I don't need to keep hearing about it for the next goddamn fifteen minutes. That kind of behavior really makes me want to try again! ...Or not.
Seriously.

- If you borrow my stuff, put it back in the same place where you took it from
Also, if it's a pen from my pencil case, put it back pointing in the same direction as other pens. They're like that for a reason.
I suppose messing up my things falls into this category, too?

I believe I failed to express myself.
I don't feel aroused. I feel bothered because looking at other's people's body so exposed makes me uncomfortable. I feel equally embarrassed by seeing man without their shirts and i always look away. It is a body part, yes, but so does genitals and I don't want to see neither. Don't assume that I sexualize everything because I don't, and that's the main reason I feel so bothered. It's simply something I don't want to see.
Personal thing though.

Especially the non English understanding people who ring up from a private number asking "am I speaking to " x " to which I respond to "you rang me you tell me who you are first" or "what's the call about (usually an overlooked bil payment)" to get the response " I cannot disclose any information until I know I'm speaking with "x""

How infuriating
