Title: How you feel about your Wig?
Post by: katrinaw on May 06, 2015, 09:00:34 PM
I washed one of wigs today, I always dry on head...

My reason is this; this is the closest I'll probably ever get to feeling I have and can care for my own hair... Such a lovely feeling, aaahhhh

Of course when you read wig care stuff, I am not enhancing its life! but hey... This is it for me.

What's your thoughts?

Mine's currently hanging on one of my bed posts (end of the post is seriously about as big as my head) full of knots and tangles that I'm terrified to even try to smooth out. Yikes!

Whaa yes I'd be scared to do that as well....

You can get detangler products, they do work, but its tedious fiddly work! Been there!

I dry mine on top of a slender canister. Katy, I do use the detangle products which helps tremendously.

The first time I put on a wig and felt hair touching my shoulders and back was magical!  :)

I love the feel of the weight of the hair too as you can feel it there. It's an intoxicating feeling. I love it.

I wouldn't pass without it. I love it but hate that I have to wear it. I so wish it was my real hair. To untangle work from the outer most ends holding onto the hair above, then move up a section at the time, I have found this works great.

Yes! It also helps to do this in conjunction with a flat iron, using it at a low temperature. This helps smooth out the kinks and the frizz. And I ALSO wish this was my real hair!

PS: "The Kinks and the Frizz" sounds like a split LP.

Hope I'm not overstepping by commenting. I don't have one yet.

However, for about 10 years I had hair at or below my shoulders. Kept it pulled back most of the time with bands or a very nice hardwood barrette.

At night if it wasn't braided, it was a pain to sleep on. Wrapping around ones face or getting in the mouth.  But the weight and feeling was great! Especially if I could feel it on my back too.

Sadly, I started losing hair and cut it short. I miss it. I have wondered about getting a wig that does the same thing. I imagine it is a love/hate relationship just like the feeling and upkeep of personal hair.

Because I still live PT male and must have shorter hair for work, wearing the right wig is critical to any chance I have at passing (and even then not so well )....  It took me several wig "misses" (and some were really bad), before i finally found a company that makes wigs that have the right fit and feel for me.  Even then I still sew in small wig clips in back because my head is flat in back and all wigs seem to slip up.

By the way, kudos to those of you that shampoo their own wigs.  This may sound silly, but I am still too afraid out of fear that they will never look the same.  I get mine cleaned at a local wig shop for $20 (sometimes a little more if they need a little reconstruction).

My tip for the day to those of you just coming out and are totally in fear of walking in to a wig shop (like I was):  Understand that most wig shops have a steady clientele of trans women and want to help you and have you as a customer.  If you have any concern, call before you go and ask if they cater to trans women.  Had I understood that earlier, I could have avoided buying three or four wigs that did not fit, looked wrong on me, etc., and invested in one really nice wig.
