Title: Went to my first counseling session today

My god, I have never felt such relief in my life. It felt so good to talk to someone with experience and understanding of my situation. They made me feel so secure and comfortable. They were able to inform me on what they do, the resources they have, etc. They were completely open-minded and accepting. They actually called me "Sam," instead of my legal name. Being there, just taking a small step forward probably made me the happiest I've ever been. I feel like I can get through this.
"A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step."
I may have taken a small step, but it feels like I've taken 5000 steps already.

Congrats. Its really important to have a therapist in your life, even if they are mostly useless, it is good to have someone to open up to, even if they don't actually do anything (except write a treatment letter). As far as my experience goes, a therapist can get you to calm down a bit about the whole trans* thing and deal with it one step at a time instead of going completely off the walls crazy because you don't know what to do, and it's probably good to have a contact in America's horribly dismal mental health system if things go downhill.

Its awesome to be able to spill your guts in a non-threatening environment, isn't it? We build up the first time in our mind into this big scary thing and it turns out to be nothing like that LOL....
I really enjoyed seeing my therapist and was actually kind of sad when therapy ended.
I'm glad that you got something out of it and I hope it continues to be a good experience for you and that you learn about yourself :)
Remember - don't hold anything back.

You took a huge big step forward. It took a lot of courage.
I know when I finished with my intake it felt like I was walking on air.

Sam, I am so glad you found your experience to be on a positive note. I agree with you and remember what a relief it was to just tell someone that I was transgender and had been all of my life. Before that experience I kept myself a prisoner within my thoughts. Now I look so forward to sharing how much I want to live my life as a woman with my therapist. I think she is actually excited for me and always asks me what is changing for me towards womanhood. And, we now talk like woman to woman instead of the male to female roles as of the past. She refers to me as she and also calls me by my name Kelly.
Again, congrats on a huge step in your journey!
