Title: Something that could help the general public understand us better

i think we need more trans* comedy. So much of being transgender seems serious. I think this makes a lot of people not want to think about it or deal with it. We have all had some pretty funny moments in our transitions, and maybe a lot of people would have an easier time with us and understand us better if they could laugh with us. I think Transparent is a step in the right direction, at least for people who love cringe comedy, but we need some stand-up comedians too. I think we should start a trans* humour thread in the jokes section. BTW, I nominate Jill F to be an official trans* comedian. All the demonstrations and lawsuits in the world will only do so much good, but I think if people can laugh with us and laugh at our enemies, we will have made enormous progress as far as acceptance goes. Just an idea, don't bite my head off if it's a bad one or a half-baked one.

well I agree that some social comedy could be a healthy thing. There are a lot of emotions in play though, so it'd have to be content that doesn't "cross that line" But I do see some great humor in postings occasionally, and I think that is very healthy. Slowly, the accepting public is getting larger in numbers and humor can help educate for sure.

What lines? I have guidelines, not rules. Guideline 1: never be afraid to make fun of yourself. Guideline 2: When making fun of others, those with power are the targets, not those without power. Guideline 3: Cross lines, just do it in a clever and witty manner. BTW, I have don't really have good hand-eye coordination, so when I paint guidelines, the results aren't always pretty ;)

Comedy can be seen as performance or literary art. Art truly does save lives while frightening despots and tyrants. Comedy is an antidote to the uptight, politically correct and rigid boxes surrounding us. Our world and personal situations can be as serious as a heart attack or suicide. Micro aggressions, misgendering, and missteps oh my! >:-)
I for one say bring on the humor, help me laugh every day and yes, help me laugh at myself too. If the general public is amused and enlightened by some irreverence we may open minds and doors to a better future?

was really just speaking about triggers in that. But yes, aiming the humor at ignorance would be good all around.

Girl, if there were "triggers" in the old days, there would be very little in the way of "Jewish comedy", one the more prevalent styles of American comedy.

What do you call a nun who has had a sex change - a trans sister.

I agree that clever, fun and non-offensive comedy can and does break through barriers. Don't hammer the audience with the trans set up though. You really want the trans aspect to be incidental - bring people in on the premises of an entertaining story that isn't about being trans, it's about people but it just happens to have a trans focus. It can be done! Only problem is you will always offend some people regardless and there will be people who say "we want people to take us seriously, this isn't helping".

I have a tendency to react to homophobic and transphobic comments with humour, sometimes aimed at the commenter and sometimes it's self-deprecating humour. However, I've found that even that can trigger other trans people.. I really don't understand triggers, the only ones I have seem to cause humour and/or sarcasm..

Ive been bantering about writing a standup routine....just kinda using the lighter side of my experiences. but im not sure if only us, and women would find funny or really care. I dont see alot of alpha males getting our humour. So i dont think it would work in a run of the mill comedy club. Ive done standup as an amateur when I was a girl in boys clothing and did well.... with just a little T humour though

Frankly, I think that other people would understand us better if they had just an ounce of empathy. I don't think that comedy will help THOSE people.

Well, any positive representation helps. Just having trans people in normal non-exploitative roles as part of TV shows and movies would take us out of the dark and make people more aware of the fact were are people. It's happening a lot for gay and lesbian people now. In the Flash TV show for example the head of police is a gay guy about to marry his partner. It's not a big role nor a big part of the show but it's played as totally normal and no one is weird or a smart ass about it... normalised and positive representation.
