Post by: Jake25 on June 01, 2015, 12:45:24 AM
Has there every been a statistic done on whether there is more discrimination and harassment against Male to Female or Female to Male transsexuals?

I'd be interested to know the results, and also what kind of discrimination and by who?

Generally it is really hard to measure discrimination because sometimes the fact of the discrimination cannot be proven.

Regarding harassment I tend to think that Male to Female transsexuals get more of it.  For me it seems that society thinks it's weird to give up male privilege and become weaker and on top of that MtF HRT cannot solve some problems which can reveal the fact that they are transsexual so they are more visible and that invites more harassment from ignorant people.

We are trying to create statistics of discrimination, harassment and assault in our country and it is very hard because a lot of times people don't even report things like that because they feel that it won't do them any good anyway.

From a legal standpoint some countries have laws that make it more difficult for genetic males than genetic females with regard to gender identity and sexual orientation. In Jamaica for example males performing a same sex act is criminalized but as far as I know for females it is not.

yeah I'd say AMAB trans people generally face more discrimination, but that's just a guess. I'd be interested to see a study on this.

I face no discrimination as a "woman" dressed as a man, but I'm sure a "man" in a dress would.

I know this is just a single study with a very small sample size, but it should help shed a scientific light on the topic.

In this study, Cornell University set up a matched-pair test to see if high-end retail stores in New York City would discriminate against an applicant just because he/she was transgender. They sent out two identically-experienced resumes for each matched pair, also matching the pair by age and race and education, with the only difference being that one applicant was transgender while the other one was cis. They used 2 matched pairs, one MtF/cis-female and one FtM/cis-male.

The cis controls received a total of 14 job offers. The trans applicants received only 2. Both of which were from the FtM applicant. The MtF applicant received absolutely zero.

This study shows that all trans people are the target of quite significant discrimination. MtFs might have it a little worse, but really both are horrible and completely unacceptable.

Wow. That's...wow.

The study is from 2008. It would be interesting to see if one was done today what the result would be. I suspect it would be slightly better but still negative for us.
