NYPD are investigating the incident as a possible hate crime
A man pushed a transgender woman onto a subway track in New York City on Monday, an incident the New York Police Department is investigating as a hate crime.
The man reportedly was behaving erratically at the subway station at Lafayette and Bleecker streets in Manhattan where the woman was waiting for the southbound 6 train. He allegedly asking the woman, "What are you looking at?" He then grabbed a plastic bottle out of the trash and threw it at her, before pushing her onto the tracks. She was taken to Bellevue Hospital for minor injuries like cuts and bruises and was released.

Too close to home for me. That said I do stand back and I can hit back. But I've not had any trouble so far.

Wow, it's just saddening and revolting to hear of stories such as this. Nobody should ever be able to inflict physical and psychological pain upon us. It's frustrating to see, but I unfortunately think it will still be a few decades before we are free of this risk.
Because we live in an imperfect world, I'm surprised to find how I've gone from being extremely anti-firearm to getting self-defense training and also a legal multi-state concealed carry permit. Also important is consistent range time and practice. I feel safer carrying.

Well, you can't carry in New York City unless you're law enforcement, or have connections to get the NYPD to issue you a magical red card.
In any case it's best to stay 5 feet away from the tracks at all times. Pushing people onto the tracks has become far too common.

I always thought they should put a safety fence up that drops down every time the train arrives and goes back up when the doors close.

When I'm waiting on a subway train I always stand back as that is one of my fears. It's happened before where some deranged person comes along and pushes someone into the path of a train. It's happened a half dozen times (non-trans related) that I know of. In some parts though you have to walk near the edge, but your against a wall and no one can come up behind you then.
