A transgender woman, left bloodied and bruised after an alleged bashing in an inner-west pub, has accused the venue of failing to do enough to stop the attack happening.

Stephanie McCarthy said she was waiting to perform with her band at the Town Hall Hotel in Newtown on Friday night when she was set upon by up to five men and brutally bashed in what she says was an unprovoked attack.

The bass player, who was left with a black eye, bloodied lip and bump to the back of the head, also said the venue allowed the alleged offenders to get away.

I hope the Police clean that place out.

People do be careful. There is a bit of a backlash starting following Caitlyn Jenner's coming out. Make sure you keep safe and avoid bigots.

The troubling thing is that Newtown is generally regarded as a pro LGBTI area - don't know how safe some places are though, especially when booze and who knows what else is involved. I think this one has effected me more than most stories about trans violence since I regularly go to Newtown and would usually say I feel safe there.

Grace,

We never walk in fear. But we do keep safe. Booze is a great driver for the mob. Once (sorry if this sounds anti-male, it isn't) a group of guys get drunk they can go into a pack mentality and lose all reason.

I have had two foul phone calls today, so far. (I forgot my home number is listed!) I think there are haters who are crawling from under their rocks.

I prefer they rant at me than at someone else and that they can't get to me physically.

One of them told me (among other things) that I was going too Hell. When I said thank goddess for that because it is freezing in Adelaide, he got really upset >:-)

This is startling and sad indeed and certainly agree that Newtown and close suburbs around it are considered LGBT safe and also a very "Arty" and Academic area...

I am guessing that they may have come into the area for a wild night?

And Fully agree Cindy with what you say about alcohol and pack mentality, just see it so many times... and no its not Anti Male... just sad facts!
Also so sorry to hear you are being harassed... some people just need to get something positive in their lives and become "social" citizens.

And apparently she is two meters (6'5") tall...! Still the height advantage doesn't help much when four drunk idiots gang up on you...

I work at that venue, there's no need for cleaning. I've been there around four years and I was performing there a couple of years before that. When I started I was not particularly passable and I've had nothing but respect from the staff members and they had my back when patrons in the early days were ->-bleeped-<- to me. I'm now one of the more senior staff members there but under a new (Gay) publican over the last 18 months it has only become more queer friendly.

The truth about this incident will come out eventually, I doubt it will go anywhere near as viral as the lies. If you are local to this venue and would like to see the footage message me to arrange a meeting - it's not going to be released publicly but I have a copy to show people who are interested. I'm still having to be very careful what I say in writing and in person so I'm not going to talk much on here, just going to say that it didn't happen the way it's being reported and Stephanie has been telling anyone who will listen an extremely distorted (and inconsistent!) version of the events that actually did happen.

You can already see from the Townie's public statement that we couldn't find anyone on staff who had spoken to Stephanie prior to the incident - if that had changed and it turned out that we did ignore warnings,  if a security guard did ignore/watch/run away from a beating etc. there would be serious and public repercussions from the liquor licensing authorities and obviously the venue would sack the people involved - it would be suicide for the business not to sack anyone that did that.

OLGR (Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing) cleared us when they visited and watched the footage a few days after and no one has lost their security license or been sacked - if you choose to believe the gay publican is protecting homophobic and transphobic staff (who are also largely queer btw) against his best business interests then there's no hope for you.

Before you ask, no I am not allowed to post the footage anywhere or share it, we don't want to be going after Stephanie but it has become necessary for us to at least offer people some truth after an intense month of personal attacks and slander from the "victim" and her crew. She has outed me in the process and the boycott campaign has affected the jobs and personal lives of a venue with approximately 50% queer staff - bar shifts have been cut and my shifts are also threatened if people don't wake up and use their brains eventually. We're very much looking forward to the trial of the two men involved (yes two - not five, not 11 or however many it's up to now). There's a lot of people jumping in with grudges they've held for years against people that haven't worked there for a long time, there's also a lot of people saying they've been kicked out or denied entry unfairly and generally complaining that RSA rules have been enforced in the same breath as saying the bouncers are hopeless and can't do their jobs. Honestly the irony and stupidity is breathtaking.

I don't come around these parts very often anymore and I've been staying off the internet lately so I might not see comments, please message if you are local and want to see the CCTV footage.

Thanks, cruise4burgers... I don't think we want to see the footage. Given this is a support site it would be triggering and not in anyway appropriate. I think Cindy's comment was aimed more at Newtown in general, since the lock out laws in the Cross there have been an increase in the number of people hitting Newtown who wouldn't normally go there, bringing their intolerance and violence with them. There was no intent to disparage the pub itself. I'm certainly glad to hear the publican is working hard to create an LGBTIQ safe and inclusive venue - having been to Newtown many times that would be what I would be looking for.

I noticed in the paper that they have now caught the thugs responsible for the attack and there has been a court hearing.

From that account they are fairly unrepentant thugs at that...

Some miserable people love to hate others to justify or forget their misery.
Fortunately, we do have such hatred crimes here. Here, all hatred are political ones.
Is that tendency of hatred crime occurrence ever relevant to Judo-Christianism, including Muslim?

Barbie,
Hatred just comes from haters. There are no religious or political boundaries. Just poor parenting.

Yes fair enough - it's not pleasant to watch, I've become desensitized I guess. It's just the only way I can get the truth out there at this time.

Apologies if my post came across as confrontational, it's been a rough month. I realise most people with less at stake don't look too deeply into the story, I'm just tired of trans people from all over the world messaging me to tell me to "hang my head in shame" because somebody with a martyr complex told them to. Also tired of people abusing my friends and co-workers for nothing - there's still outbursts from protesters, abusive phone calls etc.  I think you'll find a similar story comes out about the incidents at court - I have a friend there for the morning hearing that said she was threatening Nicholas Wells, there's chatter on the smh article thread about the afternoon hearing saying she was threatening the other guy. I also have trouble believing that kind of behaviour (taunting your victim) would go unnoticed in a court room if you were stupid enough to do it.

Yes. I am interested in what actually triggered the incident and whether it was actually involved with hatred for the gender minority. Let's see it in months.

No worries, I understand that some people get their knickers in a knot and send abuse without considering or knowing all the facts...the online lynch mobs.
