Title: Your hobbies?
Post by: Teri Anne on December 25, 2005, 06:23:49 PM
Okay, so I'm a newbie here but I checked - no one had done a poll for "hobbies" on the list of polls (at least recently).  I deliberately left out passive home stuff like watching TV/movies, reading and writing or active stuff like shopping or housecleaning because, from what I presume, most of us do that.  Thus, I want to uncover things we DON'T know about one another.

Picking just THREE may be hard but you'll just have to pick your faves.  Have fun.  Good night and good luck.

Hey, you forgot building and racing cars, motorcycles, boxing etc.... and Nature activities, so aside from Walking and running for excercise you didn't leave me three that I actually do as a regular rull time activity or hobbie purpose.

Ya gotta remember, some of us girls like to get gritty.

I picked out 3, but would like to have something else to do in my life. I'm kind of winding down on the volunteer work and bicyling I do only when the weather is nice along with gardening. I'm not into the other things nor the dirty things like cars or things like that.

I put singing under "musical instrument", but it sounds awfully like one of those pretentious voice coaches: "you MUST take care of your instrument", "feeeeel your instrument".

And what, no computer geeky stuff?

For me, none of the above.
I'm into the geeky hobbies plus a few others.
Computers (building and programming), electronics (design and experimenting), photography, wood working, and those are just the ones on the top of my head.

I love doing the work but where I handle food all day I do wear latex gloves-makes the clean up much easier.

I was in the driveway last summer, the car up on jack stands so I could rotate the tires and Mike, the neighbor and his wife drove up and he asked "why in the world are you doing that"  My answer was simply "Because I can"

If its something I can't do or don't have the knowlege to do I take my car to a woman owned and totally woman staffed automotive shop.

With no fishing or camping on the list, half of the women I know would have less places to vote.

Some you missed, Teri Anne, that I'm into are
Nature activities like birdwatching and enjoing nature.  I collect fish and maintain a freshwater 90 gallon aquarium.
Also I'm a computer geek too and love fixing computers (hard on the fingernails and I can't wera latex glovesdoing that) creating websites and PP slidshows and just surffing around the internet.
One of my newest hobbies is collecting woman shoes. ;D

Oh! Religion is not a hobby for me it's a realtionship with Jesus Christ, but I picked it in the poll anyway.

I think this is a very good way to learn more about our sisters and brothers here at Susan's.

Sketching (pastels and charcoal), rollerblading, coin collecting, all things fantasy (D and D, novels, festivals, etc.).  I have way too much time on my hands  :-[   I think though that sketching fantasy characters is my favorite hobby.  I love Dragonlance characters the most. (even Bupu!)

Yikes, you'all came up with some great additions.  Unfortunately, if I add them now, the poll becomes somewhat meaningless because yuo can't revote with your preferred choice.  "Nature" is something I'd jotted down on my pencil list but forgot to include.  Sketching I'd list under "art."  Rollerblading isn't really walking or running....hmm, this list could be 25 or more choices!  While "religion" and "watching concerts/plays" aren't what I'd define as "active hobbies, they nevertheless, for some people are very important, so felt I had to include them.  Fixing and racing cars, building computers, photography, woodworking...gosh, all wonderful active pastimes!  Maybe we'll try this "hobby" test in a few months with these additions.

One of my faves is scuba diving in the Caribbean during the summer.  The woman who helped my transition (my "womantor") introduced me to the sport and I'm most happy when I'm underwater.  I glide around over 70 foot cliffs and don't fall - it's the closes thing to flying that I know.  Oops - there's another hobby I left out - flying!  Maybe the list should be 100 choices, lol.

By typing these choices in your posts, we know you better than we did before.  Thank you.

Probably more (=

I claim all things computers as a hobby, even if they are work related too. For that matter, I seem to think rpg design is a hobby... more like obsession lol... but that dove tails pretty close to my work too (game developer, well attempting to be :P) other than that... um.... thinking (=

 :( ??? :-[ :-\ :'(

I don't fit in.

I don't do any of these.

I weave baskets
I swim for personal health everyday
I do the decorating for the rentals we have and in our home.
I would love to play piano so I have one I bought from a woman for $100.00 about 15 years ago. Can find someone who will teach adults.
I collect a lot of things does that apply or do we need another poll for collections?

Oh I gues I do some volenteer work at the nursing home  beauty shop and fix the ladies hair once a week. Oh goodie I do to fit. I guess I can go back to the poll now.

Smiles, ^-^ :D :)

Sorry if it is against the rules to bump up a topic like this! but I didn't see that in the rules. :D

I do a lot of things, but I'm mainly into musical instruments! I play trumpet (which I don't really like anymore), clarinet, and flute. I really want to play bassoon really bad, in fact that is what I want to major in! Music, and bassoon perhaps! It's a distant dream, but that's what life is all about for me, is it not?

I also am known as a good writer and I draw a lot. I've won quite a few contests drawing.

People always call me creative. Good to know I'm at least good for something! LOL.

When I have the motivation I really enjoy designing and building furniture and smaller items in my way too small (1 car garage) woodshop.

I enjoy a little gardening too but more landscaping than vegetable or flower gardening.

As a frustrated musician (piano, viola, guitar, clarinet, all when I was younger) I enjoy travelling about the local area to listen to local talent.  There's some pretty good stuff out there if you can find it or, in other words, wade through the junk to get to.

Golf (sorry about the four letter word ! :D) is a summer passion.  I get to see all of the out of the way spots on the course too!  Makes me feel like I'm getting my money's worth and more  :P

For me, it's religion first.  I'm always doing philosophy, meditation, and spiritual practices to modify my aura.  Barefoot walking, stargazing, et cetera ad nauseam.

Second is literature.  I like writing short fiction.

Third is music.  I'm not really proficient, but I like to play around on my synthesizer.  Sometimes I'll compose stuff, but not often.

Sarah,

The practice of a religion would not be a hobby however the study of religions by an amateur could be considered a hobby. I believe that is what the author of this poll was meaning.

A hobby is nothing more than an activity pursued for one's enjoyment.

I enjoy my religious practices most of all.  Therefore, they are at the top of my hobby list.

Actually, Teri Anne, I love architecture, always have, even before I knoew much about it.  I had the good fortune of attending a class on American architecture at my university.  The homework was to travel about he city and look at houses.  It was even more fun because my SO could join me.  On and off, I've continued my reading of architectural texts.  It does, in a way, tie into furniture design, which I enjoy even more.

I have to admit, though, that since this class I've been a menace on the road whenever I go somewhere new because I'm constantly being distracted from the road by the desire to look at the buildings as I drive by. ::)  When I accused my architecture professor of ruining me in that way he said, "Yeah, me too!"

That's neat, Helen W.  I told an architecture writer/editor once that he's made me richer and poorer (richer in knowledge, poorer in money).  It's surprising that that something that we live in and is all around us is not more of a hobby by people.  I did architectural document films for awhile for a nonprofit group  It seems like there would have been far more interest if I'd done films on any sport -- even knitting.

I have another hobby.  I really got into Parkour.  Actually, here (http://www.clipshack.com/Clip.aspx?key=48E122340309C071) is an old video of some of my stuff.  It was taken back when I didn't have much physical confidence.  Although I can beat the heck out of my martial arts friend on the balance beam.  He's all fight, no balance.

I answered with Bicycling, Gardening, and walking.  But it never is as simple as that.  I've ridden a bike constantly since I was 8. Had a paper route all through Jr and High School.  I have really great legs.   ;)
Walking, well I was in Germany many years, and just loved the Volksmarches.  Different area/town each week, walk 20km, around 12 miles.  Check points, get card stamped, have a good german beer.  At the end, a feast.  yummy. ;D
I grow a mean garden, hot peppers, tomatillas, and regular tomatoes.  I grow peppers that make most men cry like little girls. I use them when I am cooking.
But it goes far deeper than that.  I love to cook, I brew my own beer, make and bake my own bread.  Cause I can, and I really enjoy doing so. I am learning to sew, I've bought a ton of patterns.  I have three dolls by Annette Himstedt.  Want to make clothes for them. I also have a my size Barbie, pathetic by comparason, but I have holiday clothes for her. She is wearing a wonderful Valentines dress right now. Uh, I have another doll, rather scary.  Tiffany, you know, the Bride of Chucky!  the other dolls don't get along very well with her.
Ok, so having dolls is a hobby too.
Oh, don't forget comics. Collecting comics is a great hobby.  I have every issue of the Simpsons, but my favorite is the Japanese Manga, Oh My Goddess.  I have one short box with nothing but that.  I love the Japanese costumes, CosPlay.  I would love to dress up like that, but there is no where to go, and you know our society just isn't ready for that.

Speaking of dressing up.  And a bit of background thrown in. I am married, both of us were recently divorced after years of maraige and we get along purrfectly.  Two kids, teenagers, came with the new marraige.  I have always been interested in all things Midieval. So our whole family now dresses in 15th centure attire, and we go to events, and even walk through wallyworld in costume.  Now that is fun!.

I built my first computer in 1980.  I've built, upgraded, and done all sorts of things since then. Highly technical stuff.  Photography, wood working, too many to mention.
Sorry, I ramble terribly. thanks for listening. :-*

I voted for:

Gardening: We're trying to be more self-sufficient.

Art: I'm a Patron of the Arts. My wife is a photographer and writer. I work at a job so that she doesn't have to.

And my third hobby: Death:
Most people get creeped out by death, but making friends with Death is making friends with Life. I am learning to be a deathwalker/psychopomp, someone who helps people cross over. My "clients" are already dead but have not yet connected with the light; I am a bridge to the light for them.
I believe that no one dies alone. There is always someone from the other side to help them cross over, though belief systems can get in the way of seeing that helper.

I have always wanted to try my hand at wine making. The problem for me at the moment is I live in a small flat (when I make fermented meats I need to hang them in my bedroom, which is always strange for guests!). I have tried a few fermented drinks before like apple cider, ginger beer and kvas. The last two worked quite well because they only need to ferment for a little while. However, I had to throw out the apple cider after my whole flat started to stink of yeast :( I don't know for sure, but I think it would be the same thing with wine so I am a bit nervous to try. Some day when I have my dream house maybe :)

Hi. Reviving this topic as it looks better than the one titled with dashes (https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/topic,125618.0.html).

In my free time I am composing music. It is what people colloquially call 'classical music'. From pieces for piano to works for symphony orchestra.

The major impact is that most of my works are published under my birth name. My chosen name is feminine variation of the birth name. So... I can't just repost them on youtube          without effectively coming out. More about it here (https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/topic,183450.msg1696518.html#msg1696518).

However, all works I recently started shall be published from my chosen name. :)

I've been playing the saxophone for 11 years now, both solo and in various concert and military bands. I also love scuba diving, watching nerdy stuff, playing boardgames, shopping, going to conventions/ cinemas/ the theatre, and cosplaying (both the act of cosplaying and making costume) ^_^
